Travel by trains through Spain

Flying into Barcelona and flying out of Madrid. Along the way we want to go to Valencia and then to Toledo. Is travel from Barcelona to Valencia easy as well as from Valencia to either Toledo or Madrid. If possible, I would like to go from Valencia to Toledo and end my trip in Madrid rather than going to Madrid then to Toledo and back to Madrid. Your guidance is appreciated.

You can go from Barcelona to Valencia easy enough, it takes about 3 hours and the train goes through Tarragona, but you don't have to change trains.

But you cannot go to Toledo from Valencia without going to Madrid and changing trains.

Toledo is not on the main train line, actually (say the one from Madrid south), it's over on an offshoot to the west. It's not on a big train route.

I have since found that there is no route from Valencia to Toledo and that the train from Madrid to Toledo is a fairly quick ride. Are there different train companies that run these routes or just one?.
