travel by train from lyon

Are there day side trips from Lyon that I can take by train? If so, can I buy the tickets on line before I leave the u.s.? Merci.

I am hoping someone with better first hand knowledge will answer you, but here's what I know. The TGV connects in Lyon. My son is taking a day trip from Avignon to Lyon. This being the case you surely must be able to take a number of side trips from Lyon since it is a large connecting point. You can buy tickets online before you leave. I have not personally done this, but my son has his ticket already. Maybe someone who knows just what to do will reply to you. Happy travels!

I have only bought tickets online from raileurope and then just for the tgv that goes from paris to lyon and paris to nice..i've never bought tickets for shorter trips so if anyone has done this, i'd appreciate whatever info you have. thanks

Do a search for MorganB's SNCF guide.

Not only can you purchase tickets ahead online, you can print them and enjoy considerable savings.
