Travel between Zurich and Vienna, using Glacier Express to Chur

We are 3 active senior citizens arriving Zurich by air from Australia in July. We would like to take the Glacier Express for part of our journey, possibly Zermatt to Chur. Is this a particularly scenic part of the GE route? We would prefer train transport from Zurich to the GE train, and from Chur to Vienna if this is practicable. Any advice or hints/experiences regarding this journey would be greatly appreciated!

First the obvious route: You can buy tickets at www.oebb.at (Austrian Railways) from just 29 euros from Zurich to Vienna on the direct Railjet trains through the scenic Arlberg Pass - see video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KV1G58ot71k

Zurich to Vienna via Zermatt is like going Sydney to Melbourne via Brisbane. But hey, anything is possible.

Just go Zurich-Zermatt and stay overnight, check train times and fares at www.sbb.ch

Zermatt to St Moritz by Glacier Express, http://www.seat61.com/GlacierExpress.htm & www.rhb.ch

St Moritz to Chur to Sargans (or Zurich again) and then Zurich or Sargans to Vienna by Railjet or overnight sleeper, www.oebb.at

I have taken the GE from Zermatt to Chur and the scenery is just OK. You will see the "Grand Canyon of Switzerland" (Rheinschlucht) and the train traverses some mountain passes with views of barren green hillsides, small lakes and grazing cows but it was not jaw-dropping like other scenic train routes in Switzerland. The food and the service was very nice and made the somewhat long journey more comfortable. I would say if it fits your schedule, do it and we very much enjoyed wandering around Chur. You need to make reservations ASAP for July, the peak season.

I have dropped it from my itinerary for early August due to the long trip time and reservations required. Plus I know my 16 year old son/traveling companion would sleep the entire way!
Best wishes on your visit to CH.

Stay either a full day at Zermatt (among the highest peaks of Switzerland) or skip it completely.
If you like scenic train rides, don't leave the Glacier Express at Chur, but go on up to the Engadin Valley and follow then the Inn river up to Landeck, a station at the Zurich - Vienna railway line.
Timetables:
Zurich airport - Zermatt: 3 1/2 hrs journey, every 30 to 60 min until 20.13
Glacier Express Zermatt - Brig - Samedan (Engadin Valley): Zermatt dp 7.52, 8.52 and 9.52 - Samedan ar 15.46, 16.46 and 17.46

Train and bus Engadin Valley:

Thanks for your helpful and speedy responses - food for thought, indeed! We have 8 nights from am arrival in Zurich till 5pm start of coach tour in Vienna. Now thinking we spend say 3 nights in Zurich, then train to St Moritz to take the Bernina Express to Tirano instead. Looking at this, I guess we take a faster train back to St Moritz to link in with trains to Vienna?
