Travel Between Munich Salzburg and Prague

So we will be traveling in mid-March this year. Beginning trip in Munich, then train/bus to Salzburg, then to Prague. Couple of questions....Are we better purchasing travel via train or bus here in states or waiting until we get to Munich? Also, from a currency exchange, should we do this before we go or wait until we start in Munich? Can we use Euros in all 3 countries or should we exchange to local currency within each country?

Book train tickets far ahead of time for nice discounts way cheaper often over walk-up fares - www.seat61.com has all about doing that; general info www.ricksteves.com and budgeteuropetravel.com. Wait until Europe to get euros good in Austria and Germany and Korunas good in Czech Republic - try to use ATMs for best rates - usually lots better there than thru exchanges here.

"Are we better purchasing travel via train or bus here in states or waiting until we get to Munich?"

There's not one rule for all trips.

Munich-Salzburg: Take the train - it's direct. Buy a ticket at Munich's main station from a ticket machine. Best fare is with the Bavaria Ticket. This day pass covers two adults for €31. Be sure to ride the regional trains (Meridian or "M" trains) and read other details at the link.

Salzburg-Prague: Use the train and pre-purchase a ticket at the Czech Railways site. Use Praha hl.n. as the name for Prague's main station. You will probably find tickets available for pre-purchase at around 1,000 Czech Koruna (about $47) for two adults. The site will show you the changes of train needed (Linz Hbf normally - the main station in Linz) and what times your train arrives and leaves there.

Will you fly into Munich airport? Take the train from the MUC airport train station into Munich. The Airport-City day ticket is the best way to take the train to Munich's main station. Buy the ticket from a machine at the station.

Hey, joetoast, I could have asked that question! Also going to be there mid-March. So, thank you for that very timely question. We're still trying to decide if we have time for Vienna, and I am increasingly (and sadly) thinking no. :( We will see.

Don't buy Czech koruna in U.S. or Austria but in Prague train stations use ATMS or regular exchanges for best returns.
