Bus - NationalExpress/Eurolines take about 10 hours. On their website I see some special fares of £12 each way.
Easyjet flies to AMS from Stansted, Luton or Gatwick. Ryanair doesn't fly to AMS, only Eindhoven, Groningen or Brussels.

Theoretically you could make a day trip of it - you're only in the air for about 45 minutes, and the airlines schedule an hour in their timetables. From Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal station it's about 20 minutes.
But you have to allow for getting to the London airport, and the required check-in times. If you got up at the crack of dawn for a flight out around 8-9am, you would be in Amsterdam city centre for around noon (local time). You would have maybe four-five hours before you had to head back to Schiphol for an evening flight back. My guess is that those times would also be the most in demand and therefore less inexpensive...
