Hey Surfergirl - that Ian McShane is one bad dude in Deadwood. As a younger leading man, he played in a popular British TV Series "Lovejoy", which had a travel show theme as he played a flamboyant antique dealer and ladies man.

Hi Scarlett, so many movies, and so little travel, sigh!
The first movie I remember seeing that really made me want to visit Rome was Three Coins In A Fountain.
More recent include what others have posted including Tea With Mussolini, Only You, Room With A View, Chocolate (sp?), Summertime of course, Enchanted April, A Month By The Lake, In Love and War (filmed basically just 15 minutes from the small town I stay in). I was rather dissapointed in Under The Tuscon Sun in one way, but enjoyed it also.
A great thread, brings to mind so many wonderful movies. It does not take much to make me dream of traveling.

mms - Is "Only You" the movie with Robert Downey, Jr. and Merissa Torme? If it is I loved that movie. The one I am thinking about had beautiful sights to see - I want to see the - I can't remember the name of it but it is the face that you have to tell the truth and put your hand in its mouth in Rome - something to that effect. Anyway I have begin to listen to Italian music - not opera but easy listening I guess - or pop and I sing along when I am driving down the road - I have no idea what I am singing but I have done it so often now that I find myself humming the tunes at work. I think that watching movies, reading books and listening to music about the country you are going to visit is a great way to enhance your trip.

Benita yes Only You is with Robert Downey Jr. and the movie you mention with the mouth of truth is Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn.
All these movies are favorites of mine but "To Catch a Thief" was the first movie I remember seeing as a young kid that made me want to travel. That roadster with Cary Grant--oh my

Scarlett, Two for the road is one of my all time favorite movies,,,so romantic,,,so beautiful. I was VERY young when I first saw that movie and was moved to tears by it. I adored Audey Hepburn in it and Albert Finney was superb....yes that would be a wonderful trip for me. I did want to see Russia after Dr Zhivago,,,but that was in 1966...oops I dated myself again;-).

Speaking of Ian McShane, does anyone besides me remember his appearance 100 years ago in a PBS miniseries about Benjamin Disraeli? I never thought a PM could be so dishy, and he did a great acting job.
I've seen "Only You" a few times, gorgeous scenery, gorgeous actors, I just wish I thought it a better movie.
Ditto "French Kiss".

Scarlett, I can't tell you all the movies I've watched especially for the scenery! Some of them have been real bloopers (think "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" but so many others have been superb. When my husband and I go to the movies, we're almost always the last ones to leave because I HAVE to read the credits that show where the movies have been filmed.
I love the Italian movies everyone's mentioned--how could there be any disagreement about how beautiful Italy is? But what's really set my heart afire are the Marcel Pagnol movies: My Mother's Castle, My Father's Glory, Manon of the Springs, and Jean de Florette to name the most popular. When I saw those movies, I knew that I would not rest until I had visited the Provence of Marcel Pagnol.
It did not disappoint.

The Mouth of Truth is located in the portico of the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, on the Piazza della Bocca della Verita (the Piazza of the Mouth of Truth), which is not of much help to you unless you know that the Piazza is between the Via della Greca and the Via dei Cerchi, a little off from the Lungotevere Pierleoni; from the church, one can see the Temple of Vesta and the Temple of Virile Fortune.

For me it was Shirley Valentine. I took the trip to Mykonos two years ago and wasn't disappointed. It was so beautiful.
Wish to heck I could have found that man with his brothers boat though - I'd have let him show me the sea that goes down for ever, that's for sure.
