If you decide to go the DSLR route remember that it takes a while to get adjusted to shooting a SLR even though most of them have auto modes now.
You'll probably get better results from a P&S if you try to learn your SLR on the plane ride over. In fact, you may be very disappointed with your first few shots out of a DSLR. The leaning curve is pretty steep on them but once you get the hang of them you'll grow to appreciate the difference.

This is a bit off topic, but I need help!!

I have been poking around the sites everyone gave me and have learned alot about cameras in the last week!

But on neocamera.com, I CANNOT get the jpg files on the site to open - they just appear as "X". I have checked under Tools, Internet Options, and reset my security settings to the lowest and everything at "Enable" and still they don't appear.

Can anyone help me? What setting needs to be turned on (specifically) so that I can see these? I am running IE 6.0.28

wanderer: can you give the URL of one of the images that isn't loading (right click on the box where it should be and click on properties, copy and paste the URL). Just want an example, and to see if it's something with your computer or something with the site.

whatever you do, be sure you shoot quite a bit before your trip. I was on a trip last year with a friend. She had a new digital and really hadn't begun to tackle the learning curve..thank goodness we were able to use my camera as although hers was "better" she just really couldn't manage to get many good shots because she was really unfamiliar with its capabilities and quirks.

Here's the URL for the Camera Basics section on the first page.

I have a Canon Sure Shot something or another - it's great for travel. I also have a Minolta 35mm and a Bronica square format (mostly B&W shots). I take all 3 with me when I travel - each one has a different tone for me. Digital is much more of the moment - 35mm is a bit more focused - the Bronica satisfies my obsessive compulsiveness (sp?), And I bring along a video camera - I have learned to fit all of it plus acessories into my Tumi backpack. Being that I travel alone most of the time I can indulge my many moods or I choose in the morning which one I'm going to take an go with that mind set. I've not tried the digital 35mm yet (I've drawn the line at four, no more.)
