Travel advise
We are family of 4 ( husband, wife 14 year boy and 8 year boy), first time in Europe and landing in Vienna at 6 am on 24th July and we will return on 31st 10am from vienna.
We seek a help to plan our itinerary. It can be Vienna, Salzburg, Hallstatt, Melk etc... Where to stay, how to move, where to eat ( we are Indians) etc.. Thank you so much for the help. Daniel |
Hi Daniel, welcome to Fodors!
You will find that you get more advise if you provide more information in your title as more people are likley to click on it with the info you require. I dont know that area of Europe but if you also tagged it with Austria etc people that know the area will know to look at your post. Some people only review certain country's posts. Hope this helps you get help! |
Hi Daniel; If this were my trip with 7 nights, this is what I would do.
1. Arriving at 6am, I would get on a train for a short ride to Bratislava [1 night]. Visit the city and catch up on sleep. 2. Train to Budapest [3 nights]. 3. Train to Vienna [3 nights]. 4. Check 'Visa' requirements. 5. Consider this hotel that has a family room and is just behind the cathedral and off the main square. www.kvu.at 6. You could takee a boat ride to Melk. |
Have you considered looking up Austria under "Destinations"?
((I)) |
Hi Iris and Jamikins,
thank you so much for your response. Please some one can help me in more details as I am planning to travel without any package so truly I need help. Also, what kind of cloths should we wear during end of July. Regards Daniel |
No problem Daniel,
To get proper responses you need to do some research yourself and be more specific with your questions. You have 1 week and need to be back in Vienna to get your flight. I would pick two places to visit in that time and go to your first location from Vienna first, then Vienna last so you dont have to worry about getting to Vienna airport on the last day. You need to decide based on your research what other location to visit. And what sites you want to see. Then we can help you with logistics, hotels (be sure to give us your specific budget). I hope this helps! |
Thank you so much Jamikins for your valuable advise, yes I am doing the research but I am confused now.
We are interested in both nature and city as well. How about land in Vienna and travel to Munich then move to Salzburg- Hallstatt-melk Budapest and back to Vienna? If it looks feasible within 7 night, how do I allocate days in each place and how to move ourselves? Please help me. Regards DANIEL |
Thats not really feasible in 7 days. Budget losing 1/2 a day every time you travel as you will need to check out, get to the train station, travel, and repeat on the other side. If you move 5-6 times you lose 3 whole days and will only have about 1/2 a day in each city. Just not worth the expence of coming over.
If you limit yourself to two locations you will get time to actually see these great cities rather than just from the window of a train. |
Thanks a lot, so should I limit to Vienna - Hallstatt and Salszburg? Please advise how many days in each places?
Thank you so much for your valuable time. |
You should get a good guidebook and determine what YOU want to see in each area and then determine the days for each. No one can really figure that out for you as it depends on what you want to see!

I assume you will be traveling by train. Look at the German train site -- www.bahn.de -- for details about train times in all of Europe. Germany has some great train fares with children traveling for free. Or you could get a rail pass for Germany and Austria. There are a number of possibilities. Check these sites: www.seat61.com and www.ricksteves.com/rail/rail_menu.htm.
You can see Melk as a daytrip from Vienna. Likewise, you could in a pinch do Salzburg from Munich; it's 1.5 hours each way. Or see Hallstatt from Salzburg in a daytrip by tour bus. |
Thanks a lot, also, please advise me how to move ( TRAIN, CAB, PUBLIC COACHES)around once you reach city like say Munich, Salzburg OR VIENNA.
Regards DANIEL |
Well, walking is always good. Munich and Vienna have subways. The website for your hotel will have directions on how to reach it from the train station.
When you arrive at a new city, you can go to the Tourist Information Office in the train station, get a map and information on how to reach the sites you wish to visit. There is usually also a central Tourist Information office with the same information and booking for some tours, excursions, etc. |
