trastevere vs campo dei fiori?
I'm debating my lodging options...
Can anyone tell me how far it is to walk (fast walker LOL) between Trastevere and Campo dei Fiori? My issue is - is C dei F subtantially more convenient than Trastevere for coming and going throughout the day, enough to justify an increased room cost for the places I'm considering? Assume dead center of each. Feel free to add any other pros/cons... thanks! : ) |
Campo dei Fiori is much more convenient for coming and going throughout the day and for stopping in for a rest in the midst of your sightseeing. Whether it is worth the increased cost depends: 1) how much are you saving by staying in Trastevere?? 2) How likely are you to return to your hotel/apt. before bed??

I'm staying in Trastevere right now (near the Ponte Sisto) and, as a fast walker myself, can be at Campo de Fiori in 5-7 minutes.
Where are you thinking of staying in Trastevere? My experience has been that Rome centro is actually quite small and if you're a good walker, the difference between Campo de Fiori and much of Trastevere is moot.... |
Thanks for the responses.
I'm thinking of staying somewhere between Ponte Sisto and S. Maria in Trastevere. Less than 10 minutes between there and C dei F is great to hear! I do plan on making pit stops throughout the day. I'm going crazy trying to figure out the most central place to be, and I don't think it exists based on all the places I want to visit. I just remember from the last time I stayed in Rome (near the Spanish Steps) that I vowed to stay in one of the other two places the next time! : ) |
I stay in Campo dei Fiori each time I am in Rome and find its location very central. I can walk from there to the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, etc. While Trastevere is close, it is still over the river, whereas the Campo is just a block away from Corso Vittorio Emanuele Boulevard, the #64 bus, and walking distance to the Roman forum area, etc.....I think the Campo is a better choice. Why not visit a Trastevere ristorante for a lunch or dinner option from the Campo?

We stayed in Trastavere the first time we went to Rome because we didn't know any better. It turned out to be a good choice for us. We're walkers, too, and from Trastavere we walked to the Vatican, to Circus Maximus, to Piazza Navona, etc. It's only a bridge away. When we got tired of walking we hopped onto the bus. There's a tourist kiosk in Trastavere where the people will help you sort out what busses to get on, so it's no trouble.
We liked Trastavere because as tourists we were in the minority. It was nice strolling out of our apartment and hearing Italian, not English, spoken. Trastavere has such a nice village-like atmosphere, too. And the food is delicious! Just wander around behind the Santa Maria church in all those tiny little streets and you'll find som many good restaurants. That's my pitch for Trastavere, but if you chose Campo dei Fiori, you certainly wouldn't go wrong. I'd happily stay there, too. But never in touristy Spanish Steps! Arggg! |
Are you looking at the Hotel Santa Maria? We checked it out for a friend and it looks lovely.
|
Looks like with the varied opinions, I'll be okay with wherever I choose!
(I'm looking at studio apartments, will be staying for just over a week and I thought I'd be more comfortable that way...) |
Like Elizabeth said, it's a 5-minute walk. Whether that's a significant issue for you or not is entirely your call.

i stayed in Campo and loved it. i thought trastevere was a little less lively. going back this may it's campo again for me...can't beat the atmosphere.

Only slightly off the subject, but does anyone else feel that Trastevere has changed a lot in the past few years? When we discovered it about 10 years ago, we found it almost devoid of tourists. It seemed to be the place for locals to go eat. But in the last couple of visits, we've been rather turned off at night. The busiest area of restaurants in jammed (I'm talking summer when everyone wants to eat outside). It seems there are even more tourists there waiting in line to eat than in much of the historical center. I realize in the daytime it is incredibly quiet there and still seems much more residential, but at night I get the feeling I'm in some sort of tourist "carnival". It certainly doesn't seem any less tourity at night than Piazza Navona or Campl dei Fiori -- at least to me.

Nutella - I'm staying in an apartment for 2 months - be sure to email me before you go and I'll give you some tips re groceries, other things you might [email protected]
Patrick - it's not terribly touristy right now but many people have said the same thing as you...... |
I stayed in an apt in Trastevere last October and just loved it and the area. I am returning in 43 days to stay in a little studio apt. in Trastevere, solo. I would like any tips you have Elizabeth! It is very much like a small village/neighborhood feeling there and I did not find it anywhere near as crowded or touristy as P. Navona, Campo dei Fiori area. The Piazza Santa Maria gets a little crowded, but that's just a small part of Trastevere.

Thank you Elizabeth, expect an email from me. Two months? Hope you're having a great time!
And Barb, I think I'm following in your footsteps - I plan to stay in the area, in a studio apartment, solo too. Will be a new adventure for me. I look forward to hearing about your trip! |
Nutella: Ain't life grand that we are able to have great adventures like this!!

I stayed in a flat on the Piazza Navona, just a block from Campo. We were there a week and walked to EVERYTHING--never even took a cab anywhere. It was the perfect location.
