If I knew then what I know now.....but here I am, maybe you can help.

Our travel site we used has us landing in Gatewick on a weekday at 7:30 in the morning. Our hotel is tThe Holiday Inn Kensington

What is the best way to get there?

Not hard at all. Train from Gatwick (note the spelling) to Victoria Station then the tube, if you can handle the luggage, to the Gloucester Rd station -- or -- you can take a taxi from Victoria, if you can't handle the luggage.

you get to the station and head up the hall...go to the right ( you will see the outside doors ahead) past the ticket machines you will do a a uturn and see the gates for the tube... but to the right and in back of you will be a line for the oyster card....get one and then enter to gate...follow the signs up the escaltors or elevator....it's an experience in itself as it is so industrial and modern....it's no problem with luggage...look to see where the closest tube stop is.....

Depending on how long it takes to clear arrivals and immigration, you might find yourself arriving at Victoria while the rush hour's still on, in which case the tube might be a bit fraught. You could have a cup of coffee at Victoria and wait for the crowds to subside.

Hi:

We just returned from London. We took the Southern train into the city. It is much less expensive than the Gatwick express, just takes a few minutes longer.

Cost one way, including one day Zone 1 TFL tube and bus passes, was 20BPS for two adults. We bought the tickets at Gatwick, and retrun tickets at Paddington (we were staying near there).

It does have commuters so can get a little crowded, but the last time we took the Gatwick Express, it was standing room only.

Speaking from experience, definitely follow PatrickLondon's advice. Victoria is a hub for several tube lines so the crowds can be intimidating. We had to wait for several trains to go by because they were so full. It was physically impossible for us to squeeze into any of the cars with our bags. Much less stressful to sip a coffee or tea and people-watch until after 9 AM.

My taxi fare from Victoria to Cromwell Road in October was only £8 before tip, well worth it to me not to have to struggle with luggage on the tube. Also, the black cab drivers are funny and a wealth of information.
