TransSiberian Rail Journey--Moscow to Beijing

My family and I are in the planning stages for a trip to Russia (St. Petersburg/Moscow). We are wanting to travel the Trans Siberian railroad through Siberia, Mongolia and into China, ending our trip in Beijing. Has anyone traveled the whole journey or partial? I've received brochures and I understand there are several trains with different scheduled stops and different ameneties and so forth. I've heard travel can be somewhat severe and the sleepers do not have private bath. Also you may be unable to use the dining car if not booked ahead or early. Just wanting to get some first hand feedback from travelers on this rail journey.

In case you haven't read it.

I am also planning some sort of trip which will include the trans-siberian railway. This site http://www.monkeyshrine.com/ has lots of information and the book they mention is great.

The big thing holding us back is fixing the dates firmly for the Visas (very complicated for us since we do not want to be tied down!).

Do tell me what you are planning timewise.

This is the travel of my dreams. Maybe one day I can follow your footsteps.

I've been looking at such a trip with Intrepid(www.intrepidtravel.com)
If you read the trip notes for that trip, you'll get lots of information about the itinerary they use,as well as information about the trains themselves.

Hi there, I completed this journey in May 2006, it was fantastic. I`ve documented all my planning activities in a book, in the hope that it will help others planning a similar trip, see details at www.trans-siberian-railway.co.uk
