transportion between florence airport and lucca?
 

We decided to go right to Lucca after arriving into the Florence airport. What is the quickest/easiest/ and maybe cheapest way to get there??

I trained between Florence and Lucca several times - there's lots of trains - not sure about getting from the airport to the station.

I think if you Google or do some other search on the Florence,Italy Airport you will find helpful transportation links. We loved Lucca, bike riding along the wall and eating lots of limone gelato!!! Happy travels.

Have you booked your hotel in Lucca?

The most reliable source of information on how to get to your hotel is your hotel.

Lucca is a walled city with various entrances through the all-encompassing circular wall at the bulwarks (baluardo). The train station is outside the walls, very close to one baluardo. The most convenient entrance through the wall to your hotel might be 180 degrees away.

Your hotel might suggest a bus, or a combination of train and taxi.

If you are carrying heavy luggage, even luggage on wheels, negotiating the steep passageway through the baluardo nearest the train station can be tricky.

We arrived in Lucca by train and took a taxi to our b&b inside the walls and were let out at the door. Taxis are allowed inside the walls, but not regular traffic, I believe.

Anybody can drive into the walled city, but unless you are an experienced driving in Italian walled cities, you are likely to find the experience aggravating and unproductive. Finding your way to your hotel on your own, amid the maze on one-way and blocked streets, is daunting, especially for the jet-lagged.

But a taxi from the Lucca train station is a fine idea if your hotel suggests you take the train. There may be a direct bus linking Lucca to the airport (which may use the train station as its depot, but maybe not).

PS: People should also know that if they drive into the historic center of the city, the great majority of parking spaces are reserved for people with resident stickers, and some streets which appear open may in fact be forbidden to all but residents, earning you a fine if you drive them in a rental car.

The roads immediately outside the wall don't have these problems, and there is a goodly amount of public parking.
