Transportation to St. Andrews

My husband and I will be in Edinburgh in August for the Festival and want to take a side trip to St. Andrews. A few years ago when we were there we took a tour bus which was excellent as the tour stopped along the way to show us other towns and villages. The only issue I had was that it only gave us two hours in St. Andrews which was not enough time. Is there a train that goes to St. Andrews? If not what transportation would anyone recommend?

The railway doesn't go to St Andrews, but you can get a train from Edinburgh and change to a bus at Cupar or Leuchars. There is a journey planner for the UK on www.transportdirect.info and the local bus comany is Stagecoach (www.stagecoachbus.com then select southern Scotland and Fife).

yes - train to Leuchars/bus or taxi to St Andrews is the best way using public transport.

OR - you might consider renting a car for the day. You could drive straight to St Andrews and spend as much time as you wanted and then wander back through some of the fishing villages and maybe Falkland Palace. and drop the car in Edinburgh.

Thanks for the responses on getting to St. Andrews. I am sure we will take the suggested train and then change to a bus. I can only say that being 60 and never having driven on the opposite side of the road all of Scotland will be glad I am taking your first suggestion! Thanks again, I am sure that taking this information with us will save us a lot of time.

I took the train to Leuchars and then the taxi; worked great; the other time we drove, but I think given you don't want to drive you are just fine with the first plan.

Do you know what the approximate cost is for a taxi from Leuchars and what the customary tipping is?

A taxi costs less than £10 from Leuchars to anywhere in St Andrews. Tip however you would normally, the taxi drivers in that area are used to taking around everyone from poor uni students who don't tip to celebrity golfers who tip big, so there is no standard of how much to tip.
