Transportation Rome Amalfi

We would like to stay on the Amalfi Coast a few days before our tour. What is the best way to get from Rome's airport to Amalfi Coast? We would like to get down there the same day our flight arrives. We are on a budget so I am looking for the best way without an enourmous expense.

Thanks

1. Direct "Leonardo da Vinci" Airport Train to Rome Termini Station (8.80 Euros), departures every 30 minutes, 32 minute travel time;
2. Intercity or Eurostar train from Rome Termini to SALERNO, 2.5 hrs. travel time. DO NOT detrain in Naples.
3. SITA bus (hourly departures, 70 mins.) or ferry (several per day, 30 mins.) to Amalfi

The SITA bus departs from outside the Salerno train station. Fare is approx. 2 Euros. The ferry departs from a dock 600 yards from the train station. Fare is approx. 3 Euros.

I always take the train to Naples and have a driver pick me up in Naples. Many hotels can arrange this for you. You can take the train all the way to Sorrento (but you will change from a Eurostar to a local train in Naples) and a bus or taxi to Positano, Ravello, and Amalfi. If you are going after June 1, you can take a boat from Naples to Positano. You might want to just fly to Naples with a connection in Rome or check out the alitalia web site. Let me know if you need more information. I have been there several times. WT

Is hard to get around at the airport and train stations? I was hoping not to have to drag around our suite cases too much. We will be going on June 24th. Would you recommend the boat over a taxi from Naples to Amalfi? Is there a big price difference?

Thanks again

Tony, GAC has given you a wonderful answer--take heed.

I haven't gone the way GAC has, but it makes sense to me! I would give it a go.

Hi there,

My note is really to GAC, thanks for your help. Was wondering if you could give a few names of hotels in that area as you seem to know how to get there?

Looking for well Under $100 US if posssible but still decent, as we are ozzies and our dollar does not go as far as yours, unfortuantely.

Many thanks
oz

Is it possible to a ferry from Salerno to Positano?

GAC May 12th, 2003 07:10 AM

Oz: In the town of Amalfi, the two-star hotel Lidomare is well recommended and within your price range. Check their web site. Cheapest hotels in Ravello and Positano will be at least 20% more expensive.

Jonimaco: There are indeed ferries from Salerno to Positano, which stop very briefly in Amalfi. They depart from the dock off of Piazza della Concordia, about 600 yards from Salerno's train station. Travel time by ferry is one hour. If going by SITA bus from Salerno, you must change in Amalfi. Total travel time by bus is two hours (PLUS connection time).

Thanks for the info.

So you would take the ferry or bus instead of getting a limo. If I don't have a car how do I get to the hotel from the dock or bus station? I'm just worried about getting confused.
