Transportation: Milan-Florence-Sorrento

Planning a trip in June to visit our daughter in Florence for 3 days then heading down to Sorrento for a week; plan is to fly in to Milan, fly home from Rome or possibly Naples. Need advice on train transport between Milan-Florence-Sorrento-Rome....easy to do, how long is each trip? Would also consider flying or driving some of the legs but train seems convenient. Thanks so much.

Check out the Italian rail website, the one in English for details: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html
That will get you to Naples. For the train to Sorrento you'll need the Circumvesuvia site. The trip will take a while but it's reasonably pleasant and you'll get to see a lot of the countryside.

The train may seem daunting but don't let it scare you. It is the cheapest and most efficient way to go.

It doesn't make sense to fly into Milan unless you are visiting places between Milan and Florence and it doesn't appear that you are. Rome is much closer to Florence by train than Milan - 1 1/2 hours v. 3 hours. It will take about an hour to get from the airport to Milan Centrale. Another option would be fly into Pisa.

Hi MM -

Milan-Florence typically takes 2hrs 45' by ES.

Florence-Naples typically takes 3hrs 45'

Naples-Sorrento normally takes just over an hour.
Departures approx. every 30 minutes.

Naples-Rome takes approx 1hr 45' by ES.

Hope this helps ...

Steve
