Transportation in Bologna

I'm going to be moving to Bologna within the next 5-12 months. I spent a few months living in Florence as a student. When I was there I walked everywhere, didn't own a bike, and never took the buses. I was able to walk to the train station or anywhere else I needed to go. I can see that Bologna is bigger, but if I'm living in the center can I count on being able to walk everywhere? Thanks for any advice!

Depending where you stay, you may be forced to do some walking. Central Bologna has a fairly complicated system of controlled traffic in the centre, closing some streets to regular vehicles. Bus routes may be altered too.
The main train station, although called central, is a brisk walk from the main plaza, estimated by Google at three to four kilometres. There is bus service; it's also the departure point for a shuttle to the airport. The Directions function on Google Maps has become very useful for sorting out this sort of question.
PS: Walking is a particular pleasure in Bologna because so many of the walkways are covered. I've seen an estimate of more than 40 kilometres sheltered by picturesque arches.

I would think you'd want to use buses at least some of the time.
