Transportation from Munich to Zurich
 

We are planning to fly into Munich and then want to travel to Zurich. Rail passes seem really high. Is there a bus that leaves Munich for Zurich? Or does anyone know of a cheaper rail line?

No need to buy a rail pass. You can simply purchase a point to point rail ticket from Munich to Zurich.

Trains without change take about 4hrs, and tickets run from 60 euro.

How about flying from Munich to Zurich?

It wouldn;t seem to make sense - since it would take longer than the train by the time you put in all the getting to/fro security lines etc, plus costs getting to and fro the airport..

If you book far enough in advance you can sometimes get a reduced fare of 29 EUR. Check the bahn.de website.

If you take the train that leaves Munich at 7:12 or at 12:34, AND you buy far enough in advance you can get a ticket for �€29.

Other departures do not offer this price.

You can buy the ticket from your computer if you have a credit card. The way to do it is to first establish an account with Die Bahn and register your credit card, which becomes your identification card.

Select your ticket on-line and charge it to your account. The German ticket service will send you a printable file which you can print on an ink-jet or laser printer with standard A4 typewrier paper. (8.5 x 11 I think).

I know that is what I did last summer.
I took two copies of the ticket with me just in case one was lost.

When the conductor came by, I handed him my home-made ticket with my credit card and that was that. He punched it like it was a store-bought ticket and went on.

You can make a seat reservation when you buy the ticket.

Unless you take the specified departures you will right now pay more for the ticket if you take other departure times. I do not know why this is true, but right now for January it is.
