Transportation Budapest to Prague
I will be travelling to Budapest in June. From there I need to go to Prague. I was looking into fying but the airfares are very high. Any airlines you would recommend? The train trip seems to be very long (around 8 hs). Any suggestion is welcome.
Thanks, Clau |
CSA Czech and Malev Hungarian are the only airlines that offer mutliple non-stops per day on this route. There's a low cost airline called Smartwings that also fly between the two, but only like twice a week.
For June, I see fares on CSA and Malev from US$217 roundtrip. Throw away the return, even if you just want one-way. |
Rent a car for a day or two. It's cheaper and it isn't a bad drive.

Hi Clau,
If you stay in our Luxury Apartment here in Prague, my driver will pick you up in Budapest in his nice Mercedes van for 250.00 Euro. You may find it difficult to rent a car to Prague because of the high auto theft rate here. Apartment Link: www.luxurypragueapartments.com I hope this helps. |
Thank you for your offer, riptide355. Unfortunately I already have complimentary accomodations at the Marriott using my reward points. What is the driving time from Budapest to Prague? Could your driver still be available for us?
Thanks, Clau |
What is train like from Prague to Budapest. Roughly how many hours?
|
It's been 7 years, but we enjoyed the train ride from Budapest to Prague - at that time the train was compartmented and had a full dining car.
I remember the trip being about 8 hours, which appears to be a reasonable average having just checked the DB site (no pricing there). |
Hi Clau,
I responded to your post, but someone took it off. If you are still interested, go to my website and send me an email and i will respond. |
I would definitely fly for 219 versus spending all those hours in a car for more money.

I took the train from Budapest to Prague on Jan. 1st this year. Maybe it was because it was the dead of winter, but it was a very long and boring train ride. We had a first class compartment all to ourselves, but it was not very comfortable. The seats did not recline and the armrests were fixed in place. It certainly was an easy trip; but If I had it to do over again, and if it was not in winter, I would rent a car and drive. I think it would be lots more fun!

We took the fast train and enjoyed it. Used it to nap and chat with friends. I thought it was quite comfortable. To each there own.

We took the train and slept for about 3.5 of the 7 hours. Our seats reclined a bit and we had the whole 6-seat first class compartment we were in to ourselves for the whole trip. But for just you and just $217, take the flight.
That limo offer for 250E is ridiculous if you're alone -- that's $325+ to ride for 7 hours or $217 to take a flight that's less than 90 minutes. If you are going with someone else, however (you've referred to the trip by mentioning "I" and "us"), and don't want to take the train, work on the limo angle. Maybe you can have a stop in Bratislava and check out the castle too. |
