what dock?

what downtown - Berlin has at least two areas folks may consider to be downtowns - the Mitte and the tourist downtown aroubd the Zoo train station.

where are you docking - there are several docks for various types of boats from ones from Potsdam on the river to ones that go around town to ones in Kupenick (sp?), Spreewald, etc

and where do you want to go exactly - again downtown in Berlin is nebulous - the Old Mitte or historic downtown before WW2 is once again the center of town but has relatively fewer hotels than the downtown of former West Berlin - around the Berlin-Zoo train station.

S-bahn train will ordinarily be the best way.

Yes, you need to tell us from WHERE to WHERE a little more specifically, Sharon.

We will come in on a Cruise Ship off the Baltic and would like to connect to pick up a City Tour from Kurfurstendamm 236. Any better ideas. Would prefer an idividual tour as we often do in cities in the U.S. Thanks for the help.

Um - Berlin is nowhere near the Baltic. Are you sure your ship is docking in Berlin? Or are you being taken via bus from the Baltic coast TO Berlin. (many cruises say they stop in florence, but the boat docks in Livorno - more than an hour away, similarly with Rome - the docks are nowhere near the cities.)

Baltic cruise ships offering a tour of Berlin usually call at Warnemünde or Rostock. The ports are over 200 km from Berlin, a journey of two to three hours by train.

Your only chance to dock in Berlin is if your captain manages to squeeze your ship through the river Elbe and river Havel into Berlin. Good luck and enjoy!

If, as surmised by GewoffHamer, the tour is run by the ship from Warnemuende, you should consider this: You will be travelling over 4 hours by train and will see only a small part of Berlin. It is a big city, with several centers. The people on our ship who took the tour were exhausted by the time they came back.

It is not advisable to do the trip on your ownin orcder to save money. The ship tour is a special train, and the ship will wait if the train is delayed. A regular train is no faster, and going by bus is very "iffy" because (1)busses get frequently delayed by road cosntruction on the autobahns. (2) The ship won't wait for you.

An alternative is do visit Rostock, or one of the Baltic seaports on your own or, as we did, take the train to Luebeck and visit that old town. There are several trains to get you back inb time for the ship's departure. (We got back in time for dinnmer, and had plenty of time in L.

The Warnemuende station is close to where the ships dock. For train info. go to www.bahn.de. For the English lanmguage version ":follow the flag" in the top right of the first screen. Check the correct spelling of Warnemuende as your point of departure.

I took a Baltic cruise that allowed for a tour to Berlin. As others have stated, it was a four-hour train trip each way from the port. We got lunch a a quick city tour. Because of the time factor, you should try to book the cruise's tour if you can. Things can go wrong, and with that long a trip to get back to the port, you would not want to miss the ship's departure.

Thinking back on it, I would not have missed the trip. But temper your expectations, you will be taking three times as long to get to Berlin as to tour it. Still worth seeing, I believe.
