Transport from Salzburg to St. Gilgen in January

We will be staying in Salzburg for several days with family and want to do some day trips--preferably by train. Reading old posts here I see several suggestions for St. Gilgen but when I go on bahn.de, I can't get any info for St. Gilgen. Do they only have seasonal service or have they stopped service entirely? Are there bus alternatives? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Look on the öbb website, but consider that St. Gilgen lost its railway station when the Salzkammergut local railway was closed in 1957, so you are likely to find only bus services.

It's 48 min by bus. Buses every 30 min.

Yes post buses frequently Salzburg to St Gilgen with service from there to St Wolfgang, to many the gem of the Lake Disrict.

Regular public buses - no need to pre-book, etc.

Thank you all.

PalenQ, does it seem reasonable to plan a day trip to St. Gilgen and on to St. Wolfgang or will that be pushing things?

You can see that they are very close - St Wolfgang I believe is the more popular - I went there to take the train up the mountain behind town but it may not be running in winter. But I think you can easily do both. I'd go to St Wolfgang first and then St Gilgen, closer to Salzburg the way the buses go I think.

Boat runs between each in season but not in winter I think.

Thanks. PalenQ. I did a bit of research and concluded as you have now advised. Think we'll go Salzburg to St. Wolfgang, then see if you feel like seeing more, and go on to St. Gilgen, or if not, just return to Salzburg from St. Wolfgang. It does seem to be cuter and also has the good hotel which I assume will offer a nice lunch. And, yes, if we do Wolfgang then Gilgen, we'll have a shorter ride back to Salzburg. Sounds like a great day trip. Thanks.
