Transport from Salzburg to St. Gilgen in January
We will be staying in Salzburg for several days with family and want to do some day trips--preferably by train. Reading old posts here I see several suggestions for St. Gilgen but when I go on bahn.de, I can't get any info for St. Gilgen. Do they only have seasonal service or have they stopped service entirely? Are there bus alternatives? Thanks for any help you can provide.

You can see that they are very close - St Wolfgang I believe is the more popular - I went there to take the train up the mountain behind town but it may not be running in winter. But I think you can easily do both. I'd go to St Wolfgang first and then St Gilgen, closer to Salzburg the way the buses go I think.
Boat runs between each in season but not in winter I think.

Thanks. PalenQ. I did a bit of research and concluded as you have now advised. Think we'll go Salzburg to St. Wolfgang, then see if you feel like seeing more, and go on to St. Gilgen, or if not, just return to Salzburg from St. Wolfgang. It does seem to be cuter and also has the good hotel which I assume will offer a nice lunch. And, yes, if we do Wolfgang then Gilgen, we'll have a shorter ride back to Salzburg. Sounds like a great day trip. Thanks.
