Transport from Heathrow...does time of day play a role?

My 18 year old daughter and I arrive at Heathrow at 8:00 am. This is our first trip to London. Our hotel is near the Old Street tube station. We will have one rolling suitcase each.
Am I correct in assuming with rush hour traffic that it would be just as quick to take the tube as opposed to hiring a car?
Thanks.

By the time you get out of Heathrow the rush hour will be finishing, but generally it's quicker to take the Tube as well as a lot cheaper

It will take an hour or so on public transportation, and there will still be residue on the underground. If you take the Heathrow Express, it will cost £20 each = £40. and you will have to change to the Northern line.

I'd suggest booking a fixed price car (justairports.com is popular here). Barring accidents, it will take about the same time. Check the price with the limo company. I'd say its probably not much more.

Alternatively, take the Express to Paddington and then get a taxi.

Frankly, coming off an overnight international flight, I wouldn't be bothered doing public transportation!

The (much) cheaper option would be to take the tube to Kings Cross and change there to the southbound Northern Line for Old Street: or you could take a taxi from Kings Cross.

Only if you have more money than sense - or an expense account

OReilly May 30th, 2013 11:36 AM

There is no need to be rude Alan!

I have plenty of sense, and spend my money wisely. Normally, I would take Patrick's route when landing in Heathrow on European flights, all the way back to SE London.

However, after a transatlantic flight, I will treat myself to a fixed price limo, as I can't bear battling the London Underground at that time of the morning not having slept. I have offered the OP an alternative. Have you considered that once she gets to Old Street station, she will have to schlep her luggage and find the apartment that could be 20 minutes away from the underground?

To each his own!

I agree with OReilly ! Take justairports for just a bit more save walking and lugging luggage!!

Thank you all for the prompt replies.
On justairports.com I was quoted a price of 39 pounds, which seemed fair.

I just emailed justairports.
Their response noted 39 pounds plus 'the car park charges'.
Generally, how much would that be? Also, what is one expected to tip a driver?
Thanks.
