Hi there,

I am travelling my partner and our son to Europe in April. I would like some advice on on travelling in Eastern Europe. Our plan is

Bucharest
Brasov
Overnight train to Budapest
Train to Zagreb
Fly to Dubrovnik
Ferry to Split
Ferry to Ancona
Train to Venice

We are planning to do this is 13 days.
My questions are:
Is this squeezing in to much?
Are these the best options for transport?

Eight cities in 13 days? How long are you planning to spend in each one? The train from Zagreb to Budapest took me an entire day (that was on a Sunday, might be faster during the week), as did the ferry from Dubrovnik to Split. If you subtract travel time, this will only allow you a quick peek at each place.

waaaaay too much travel and too many stops in just 13 days.

Which 3 or 4 of these destinations are your "must sees"?

Hi, thanks for your responses. I had a feeling I was squishing into too much (I tend to do that). I really want to spedn the most time in Romania and Croatia (Hungary is really just to get from one to the other. Ancona is just for travel also. We will probably go for about 17 days now...we are going to the UK as well. Will be on hols for about 5 weeks.

Is travelling on the trains between croaita/hungary/romania easy?

Bucharest has some nice things, but the strength of Romania is in its towns and countryside, imo.

The train from Bucharest to Brasov is fine, if a bit old. The ride is around 4 hours, iirc. Brasov is nice - be sure to check out the Black Church (with its fantastic collection of medieval era Islamic carpets <i>everywhere</i> in the church interior) and the medieval towers/walls around the city. Also leave time for the cable car. We didn't have time, but we did walk up a nice wooded path on the opposite hill past the white tower and the black tower (I'm working from memory on these names).

The other two major Transylvanian medieval cities - Sibiu and Sighisoara - are also worth visiting, not to mention the Transylvanian fortified Saxon churches that are UNESCO sites.

Of course there are other wonderful areas in Romania, but not as easily accessed via train, I believe.

You have tacked on to the end of an old thread that had a pretty poor title and didn't get many responses back in May. Many people who know about the topic didn't answere because &quot;Transport&quot; is just too general.

Start a new thread w/ a title something like &quot;Trains from Zagreb to Budapest to Prague?&quot;

you should check out the train services. You can get the train from Zagreb to Budapest which takes approximately 6 hours because of the stops.
