Translation

Can anyone translate the following for me.
Thanks

je comprends que vous venez à paris en aout , et que vous souhaitez trouver un hotel
je vais aller sur le site et vous recontacterez,
maxime tu peux expliquer que nous sommes à 200km de paris qu'il est facile d'arriver chez nous en train
voir nous pouvons également aller chercher ces personnes à paris si ils le souhaitent pour venir à vierzon

Perhaps punch it into babelfish and see how you get on first.

(translation from a Spaniard)

I understand you´re coming to Paris in August, and that you wish to find a hotel. I´m going to check on the site and will contact you later.

Maxime, you can explain that we are at 200kms from Paris, it´s easy to get to our place by train.

(?¿) we can also go and pick these people up in Paris if they wish, so they can come to Vierzon.

Funny French, in any case...

"The Americans are hiding in the barn."

mikelg's translation seems fine to me - "voir" in this context is a mispelling of "voire" and basically means "or".

So, to edit mikelg's translation: "...Maxime, you can explain that we are 200km from Paris, and it´s easy to get to our place by train. Or, we could also pick these people up in Paris if they wish..."

Hanl I can see 2 other mistakes, can you see them too? :-B :-d

lobo_mau Mar 14th, 2008 08:02 AM

2 other mistakes in the original post or im Mikelg's translation?
I can see neither, but I'd like to know where they are.

My guesses:

et vous recontacterai

s'ils le souhaitent

kappa Mar 14th, 2008 08:42 AM

Hmmm..."aller chercher" (to go to pick up) and "rencontrer" (to meet) are not the same thing.

> je vais aller sur le site et vous recontacterez,

(Je) RecontacteRAI.

kappa Mar 14th, 2008 08:45 AM

Oops, ignore my post above. Just messed up.

Michael Mar 14th, 2008 09:12 AM

tu peux expliquer que nous sommes à 200km de paris et qu'il est facile d'arriver chez nous en train

cocofromdijon Mar 14th, 2008 09:16 AM

Well done for recontacterai (it means JE vous recontacterai)

The second one is about "personnes" which is a feminine word, then it should be "si elles le souhaitent".(even if there are men only)Les grandes personnes, les personnes âgées...
You would be right Yen with a masculine noun (s'ils le souhaitent)
Voilà! :-)

hanl Mar 14th, 2008 09:18 AM

Coco, I think I've spotted the mistakes you mention - as well as "recontacterai", it should be "s'ils le souhaitent"
:)

lobo_mau Mar 14th, 2008 09:37 AM

The 1st should have been spotted, but the 2nd is too much subtle for non-French speakers.
Anyway, thanks a lot.
French is my very favourite language, but after highschool, I had no further contact with it.

pjsparlor Mar 14th, 2008 09:47 AM

just curious, is this you Maureen??

Padraig Mar 14th, 2008 10:43 AM

I'm not sure that I agree with cocofromdijon.

The structure of the sentence is "je vais aller ... et vous recontacterez." I would not use "recontacterai" without its own "je"; I would go for "je vais ... vous recontacter".

I am surprised at the idea that you should not use the inclusive form of pronoun ("ils") for a group of people who might be male, female, or mixed, even if "ces personnes" is used earlier in the sentence. There is some freedom in French to go past the gender of a word and consider the gender of who it refers to, as you see in "madame le maire". Would you refer to her as "il"?

cocofromdijon Mar 21st, 2008 06:06 AM

You can either say
"je vais aller sur le site et vous recontacterai (you can add "dès que possible")
or "je vais aller sur le site et je vous recontacterai"
It is not incorrect but I wouldn't use "je vais" twice, it makes a repetition.

Madame le maire, or madame le juge est occupéE. We are talking about ladies and it is the first word that counts and it is feminine. :-)
