Transit fares in London?
 

I read Rick Steves' "Europe through the Back Door" and he suggested getting "tourist tickets" in London for unlimited travel on all public transport. He mentioned that they may seem expensive but are worth it. Unfortunately, he didn't name any prices. Anyone have any idea what a 2-day fare would be? Also, where would I obtain one? Is it possible to get one at the Gatwick Express station? Any leads would be helpful. Thanks!

Mary, <BR>You can find information on the various types of travel cards for London at www.londontransport.co.uk including types, their costs and what modes of transport they encompass. You can get them at any underground station in London. Since most tourist attractions are within zones 1 and 2, don't invest in passes encompassing the remaining zones. If you choose to visit outside those two zones, you can buy a supplemental ticket for that excursion.

It's called a Two Zone London Day Travel Card. You can certainly buy it at the railway station at Gatwick. It starts to work from 0930 Monday to Friday, but any time at weekends. <BR> <BR>Are you sure you want Gatwick Express ? Connex South Central cost a pound less to Victoria and take five minutes longer, Connex to the Midlands run hourly from Gatwick to Kensington Olympia, good for hotels in Kensington, Earls Court and South Kensington, and Thameslink cost the same as Gatwick Express but take you you to Kings Cross Thameslink and so almost to Bloomsbury, or to Charing Cross station, beside Trafalgar Square. Individual tickets are 1.50 pounds; a carnet of ten tickets is 11.50 pounds. The day pass is definitely a savings at 4 pounds if you're doing more than 3 rides a day, and most travelers do, and if you're starting out after 9:30. The weekend passes are a savings of 25% off two one-day passes, but I don't know if there's a time limitation in the morning (my recollection is there isn't). <BR> <BR>I used the Gatwick Express, but didn't realize there was the Connex until after I'd bought my ticket. <BR> <BR>

Unlike weekdays when passes can't be used before 9:30AM you can use the passes at any time on weekends. <BR> <BR> <BR>
