Transfer From Rome to Amalfi Coast

I contacted a few different drivers about prices from Rome to Sorrento and/or Ravello. The best price I got so far was $350euro. The driver said the distance to Sorrento is the same as the distance to Ravello and therefore the price is the same. Is that right? I thought Ravello was farther. Can anyone recommend a driver and/or how to find a driver with better prices? I was hoping to do it for under $300e. Thanks!

Do you want to go to Sorrento or Ravello? Are you traveling from the airport or Rome? I don't think you will find a driver cheaper.

Other options, bus from Rome to Sorrento (about 17E per person) and arrange for a driver to Ravello from Sorrento. Or train (about 38E per person on ES 2nd cl)to either Sorrento (involves train change at Naples) or Salerno. You would then to need a driver from Salerno or public transport (ferry/bus).

Well as to distance - check a map but I think the thing is that Sorrento is on a peninsula out to the west and maybe Ravello is more due south. If you can't find a reasonably priced driver, Sorrento may be more accessible by other means of transportation.

I used www.tourofitaly.com for a transfer from FCO to Positano in September and it was 300 Euro. I highly recommend them!

I'm not sure if their prices have changed (it was January '08 when I booked) but you may want to email them.

I would doubt that you will get a price less than 300 Euro. I would even consider that price to be a bargain!
I think you did very well. Who is giving you that price?

There is a back road to Ravello over the hills that avoids all of the coast---about the same time as to Sorrento. Also look at Renato Cuomo---he has a web site.

Thanks everyone!

ekscrunchy - I believe it was Dion who I found from your wonderful trip report. He quoted 350e.

I am now considering starting our trip in Capri. This should help b/c we can take a car to Napoli and then take a ferry straight to Capri from there. Does anyone know the price and length of time for the ferry from Napoli to Capri?

The hydrofoil from Napoli to Capri is about 40 minutes and, this past summer, the cost was $16 Euro a person. The ferry takes twice as long (80 mins) and cost $9 Euro.

We stayed in Sorrento so we took a train from Rome to Naples and then a driver from Naples to Sorrento. The train was $36 Euro each and the driver $99 Euro so while a bit more of a hassle (although nothing bad), it was about half the cost of using a driver from Rome to Sorrento.

From Sorrento, we did numerous day trips including Capri, Amalfi, Pompeii, etc. Sorrento is a good location to base from to see the surrounding areas including Capri.

Thanks! He is very sweet and I am happy to know that he is offering a good price.

His price for a day trip (to Paestum) was much lower than that of others we contacted.

Is the 300E one way or round trip? Can anyone adivse me if it is worth flying into Rome and then taking a train to Naples or the Amalfi coast? The cost savings is about $400 or more to fly into Rome vs Naples, but the flight times & connections are better.I have heard the train is economical and takes about 2 hrs to get to the coast? Is this true is it worth the hassle? Help!

ekscrunchy Nov 26th, 2008 04:34 AM

The 300 or 350 euro would be one way from Rome airport to the Amalfi coast.

I think it depends on your budget.

Have you checked all possible routes to Naples? Iberia offers good fares from JFK.

kybourbon Nov 26th, 2008 05:00 AM

kncoradi - To train to the coast you will need to catch the Leonardo Express train at the airport to Rome Termini (11€ per person and takes 30 minutes). From Rome you catch an ES or AV train to Naples (about 38€ and 90 minutes). From Naples the local train to Sorrento (3.60€ and 70 minutes) and you would catch a bus to where you are staying (Amalfi? Positano?). There is a bus from the airport to Salerno, but it only has one daily departure at 3:20 and arrives Salerno at 7:20. From Salerno you would need to catch the local bus the rest of the way.

I think it depends on your budget and luggage. The trains are very difficult with lots of bags. If you decide on the train, try to minimize your packing and take the lightest bag possible.

We haven't made definite plans yet for the airfare or where we are staying in the coast. We will be staying on Capri for 3 nights and figure we will do that on the front end of our trip. My budget is about 5k for the week. Would like to keep the travel & accomodations to 4k & under with the extra 1k for spending. I just hate that the airfares are so expensive from Washington or Philly, about 1000 each. I have found fares & decent times @ 850....We are splurging in capri and spending 1300 for a suite at the Caesar Augustus, but beyond that we havn't locked into anything yet.
