Transfer from Gatwick to Heathrow

Our BA flight from Venice to London arrives at Gatwick and our ongoing BA flight to the USA departs from Heathrow. What are the alternatives for transfer? Will BA forward our luggage or do we collect it and transfer it with us and recheck it at Heathrow. We have a long layover between flights.

search for National Express bus links that go constantly between the two airports. Ask the airline the question about baggage.

I'm pretty sure you are responsible for all aspects of the transfer, including luggage. However, as others have said, check with BA. The URL for the direct coach service between Gatwick and Heathrow is www.nationalexpress.com. Your "long layover" may not be as long as you think. You should allow a minimum of five hours between scheduled arrival at one London airport and scheduled departure from another. However, some people say that four hours is adequate for Gatwick-Heathrow.

I always try to avoid this. The Miami flights go into Heathrow and the Orlando flights go into Gatwick. I live between Miami and Orlando. Good luck!

No - they won't transfer the luggage for you. The already mentioned airport coach is the only resonable way to do the transfer. It isn't difficult - hundreds of travelers do it every day.

But how long is your "long layover"? It makes a difference if you have 5 hours or if it is 12 hours. W/ a really long layover you would have time to go into London and see a bit, have a meal or two.

The airport websites for Gatwick & Heathrow tell you all about transferring.

And what is your definition of a "long layout" - 3 hours, 6, 24 - anything under 5-6 hours is NOT a long layover, it's the minimum you should allow for

Thanks to all. This was very helpful.

so - how long do you have??? Inquiring minds want to know . . . .

Alice_the_Magyar May 19th, 2006 04:15 PM

Like everyone said here, 5-6 hours is not a long lay over. You will not have to to site see in London, in that short time period. It took me close to 3 hours to get to the center of London 2 years ago. Thank God I had an over night lay over. Alizka

If I had a Gatwick-Heathrow connection with a long layover, I would bust my chops to get to King's Cross and have a meal at the North Sea Fish Restaurant (7-8 Leigh Street).

Thameslink from Gatwick and Piccadilly Line from Heathrow. Your plaice, or mine?
