Trains - Service Classes

I'm planning a trip to Italy (Rome/Florence/Venice/Rome) for this November. I noticed that the express trains offer 1st class and 2nd class services. Can anyone comment on their travel experience between the two services - how different are they? - I'd like to cut costs where I can so I'm considering buying 2nd class tickets, but would like to get your feedback first. thanks.

Hi Aleeta,

If you are under 40 go 2cl. If you are over 55 go 1cl.

ira-

Does that mean people between ages of 40-55 are not supposed to travel? :)

If it's a Eurostar train, 2nd class is fine.

Otherwise, I'd stick with 1st class if you have a choice.

It's not only that the cars are nicer and cleaner, but the people who are on those cars.

We took the ES train from Rome to Venice the week before last. We went first class (because I wasn't sure in advance of how big a difference there was). While on the train, I went into the other car to check out the 2cl, and there was not a tremendous amount of difference, so I think you'd be fine in 2cl. There was a little more room, and seats looked a little more comfortable, but 2cl looked just fine. As someone else said, that assumes you are talking about the ES trains, which it sounds like you are since you mentioned the express trains.

As a general rule there are fewer seats in 1st Class in the same amount of space that a larger number of seats occupy in 2nd Class.

As to the comment about the "people" in First vs Second. I think the only "difference" is the people in First Class were willing to pay more and I suppose that is because they think it is worth the extra money.

Please don't fall for the old, "You'll meet more locals in 2nd than in 1st" routine so often posted here. Just as many "locals' travel in First as in Second; the former are simply willing to spend more money.

For me,if I'm trying to save money, it's a no-brainer. Go second!
