Trains from Rome to Umbria

My wife and I headed to Italy soon. We will stay in Rome a couple of days, then it is off bike touring for three weeks in Umbria. We need some advice on where to train to in Umbria. We are looking for a location easy to get to from Rome and central for a bike tour. We are considering Orvieto or Foligno. Has anyone traveled to either or both of these towns from Termini? Any suggestions for other towns to train to? We would rather not go to a heavily populated area. Any advice on using the trains?

Also, any recommendations for a guide book for planning a day and a half of touring the highlights of Rome?

Thanks.

Jeff
Thanks.

Hi jeff,

Orvieto is a very nice town. However, it is high on a hill and you will have to take your bikes up by the funiculare.

Schedules from Rome to Orvieto are at www.trenitalia.com/en

From Rome Termini and Rome Tiburtina you can take a "Regionale" (local) train to Narni Scalo, Terni, Spoleto, Trevi Scalo, Foligno, Spello, Assisi, Perugia. Some services to Spello, Assisi and Perugia require a short train change in Foligno. Foligno is an excellent place to get off, it's totally FLAT, and you can take your bike to the nearby historic towns such as Spello, Bevagna, Montefalco and Trevi (the latter two are high on hills).

BTW, you CANNOT take a bicycle on the Eurostar Italia train, but some "Regionale" trains are equipped to take bikes.

Another vote for Foligno - just less than two hours from Rome and flat!! And within easy reach of Spello, Spoleto etc.

Hello All,
Thanks for the guidance. Since we have folding bikes that fit into small carry bags, we don't anticipate having difficulty getting on a train.

We might go with Foligno. Being flat isn't an issue. The law of the road is wherever you want to go it is up. We are resigned to our fate.

Thanks again.

Jeff
