trains from Milan airport to city to Cinque Terre and back
 

I am having so much trouble getting schedules. I don't care about price, just times between Milan - Malpensa Airport and the city! All I can get is that they have so many trains a day and how long it takes, not when they go!! Help,please

We are going to Cinque Terre for 2 nights at the end of our trip. We arrive in Milan at 5 pm on May 25th from Greece so figure we would probably overnight in Milan and take the train to Cinque Terre on the morning of the 26th. We have reservations in Vernazza for the 26th and 27th and figured we would take the train back to Milan on the 28th, see a little of Milan and then catch the train to the aipport on the 29th in time for a 10 am flight back to the USA.

I have tried registering with Trenitalia, but I still can't seem to get information. I got the train info on Rail Europe between Milan Central and Levanto, just need the airport to city info for Milan! Don't suppose someone could cut and paste it for me into a reply? Malpensa to Centrale or Carbone on May 25th after 5:30pm and returning to the airport am on the 29th? Any help would be appreciated.

Use this link, the official website. Just choose a date next week to see all the choices, including Regionale (R) trains. (If part of your trip includes R trains, it may not show tickets available more than a week in advance.)

For the airport, enter Malpensa aeroporto and Milano Centrale. From Centrale to Levanto, the only option that shows is the IC train departing at 20:10 and arriving Levanto as 23:07

I must be doing it wrong as it keeps saying there is no station which corresponds... I have tried Milan, Milan -Malpensa Airport, just Malpensa Airport, then for downtown I have tried Milan Central, and with an e Centrale, what am I doing wrong?

Thanks, that works! now I just have to decide if I want to overnight in Milan both ways or maybe try to get down to Genoa on the first night -

I am sorry to bandwagon this forum, I was hoping that I may too be able to get some advice. Similar to Roz I am flying into Milan from the UK on 24/05, landing at 11.30. I am then needing to get down to Vernazza for a dinner reservation at 19.30 (where I plan to propose to my girlfriend). I have made lots of arrangements at the restaurant so getting there is somewhat of a must and am now beginning to stress about logistics.

I have read on many forums that the trip takes 3 or 3 and a half hours, however putting the details into trenitalia it is giving me an estimate of closer to five hours. The website gives me some strange search results so I was wondering if there is anybody that has some recent information on the journey. Am I right in understanding that the fastest way to do it is airport to milan centrale and from there to sestri levante where I change to Vernazza?

Any help would be very very welcome and appreciated.

First of all, while I realize you prefer not to be late, the restaurant is not giving away your table if you do. In fact, if you are arriving in the restaurant at 19.30, you are likely to be the only people there for another 30 minutes to an hour.

Which Milan airport are you arriving at? Malpensa or Linate?

Sorry to jump in. We would like to go to Cinque Terra in June while touring and its sounding like the best way is a train from Milan? Also, does anyone recommend accomodations while there that can be done on a budget? Not expensive? Any help would be great.

To get answers about Cinque Terre accommodations, it would be better to begin a new thread with a title "Budget Accommodations in Cinque Terre", tag it Italy, and then ask your question using specific numbers, such as . . .

"We are two adults and need a room in Cinque Terre that costs no more than 100 euro." or "Our family of four, two adults and two kids, ages 12 and 7, need one room for 175 euro."

The more guidance you can provide, the better the answers you will receive.

jackiebowyer1, for the best chance of getting answers to your questions, you should start a new thread with a more appropriate title.

Include where you'll be coming from before the Cinque Terre and your actual lodging budget (a number, as opposed to the vague "budget, not expensive" description).

We use Malpensa Express bus between the airport (MXP) and Milano Centrale. Buses are frequent and the trip is just under 1 hr.

On the return to Milano Centrale you could store your luggage at the train station, see sights & have dinner in Milan and then take evening Malpensa Express bus to MXP. There are several hotels near the airport that provide shuttle service to and from MXP. With a morning flight to US, we prefer to stay near the airport the night before departure.

For train schedule info, use the German rail site, Bahn.de. Direct trains from Milano Centrale to Levanto take about three hours. Looks like IC trains with no connections leave Centrale at 8:10 or early afternoon at 12:10.

To return to Milano Centrale from Levanto there is an IC direct train at 11:01, arriving Centrale at 13:50 with time to see the Duomo, the adjacent Galleria and perhaps La Scala. If the weather is good, don't miss walking on the marble roof of the Duomo among the marble statues.

FYI, there's now a direct train from MXP to Milano Centrale. I took the bus in 2009 before the train was done, but in 2011 I took the train (the other direction from Centrale to MXP).

Andrew, thanks for the update on the train from MXP to Centrale. Our last trip through MXP was 2010.

We've flown into Malpensa many times and we always use the Milan Shuttle bus services, as there are two. They are easier to find than the train. The buses are located outside of Uscita 2 (exit). You can buy tickets from a sportello (ticket window) or from the driver. Just make sure the bus you board is going to Stazione Centrale. You put your luggage in the cargo section and find a seat (s). The trip takes about 40 minutes and delivers you on the side of the train station.

Also, we highly recommend Hotel Berna on Via Napo Torriano, located about 400 meters from the station. Berna is a 4 star property with nice rooms, a great staff, and the best breakfast in Milano. You can reference it on tripadvisor.com. Highest recommendations.

I have taken a bus from Malpensa direct to Genoa and caught the coast train to CT. This was several years ago, so I would check the Malpensa website to see if the bus still runs.
