Trains from Budapest to prague
Does anyone have any advice about taking a train from Budapest to Prague? I just heard that a first class tx is $300 if bought in the U.S. This sounds really expensive. Is it worth it? Is there an inexpensive way to purchase train tx?

Yes - wait until you get there and buy a second class ticket. But do realize it is an 8 hour trip - so won;t be super cheap.

The direct train 9.28 am e.g. arrives 4.21 pm in Prague. I took that one in March (to Dresden, Germany). Not crowded, 2nd class was fine. As I had purchased the ticket in advance in Germany (saver ticket, 39 Euro) I have no idea how much the fare Budapest - Prague is. I guess not more than USD 50, though.

If you want super cheap take the bus. There are direct connections and they cost way way less than the train. And they take about the same amount of time as well.

Check out the cheapo airlines too -- there are direct flights from Budapest to Prague now, which won't take 7+ hours.

Just to add my comment on train trip from Budapest to Prague. After failing to get one of the 19 euro discount tickets I went to a MAV office in Budapest and asked what other discount tickets were available and got 2 tickets for a total of 58 euros on the EC170 which departs at 9.28am.
The trip was great, interesting and really smooth. The cars were reasonably full but there was no trouble getting a seat. There was a buffet car or you could take a picnic as we did. It arrived in Prague right on time at 4.20pm. So, it takes just under 7 hours and I would hate to sit on a bus for that length of time. Take the train! |
Just go on! Doing this same trip in Oct 2012,(as part of a 2 month trip) I'm going to check the cheapo airlines before I book the train. Found that going by air from Prague to Amsterdam was a lot cheaper and a lot faster then the train! If we go by train, is it a scenic route? If anyone can give me more information I would greatly appreciate it.
