Trains? Boats? Busses? Best way to get from Venice Airport to my hotel???

My flight arrives at 11:00 on a Saturday in Venice and I'm booked at Hotel Paganelli, which is said to be 'a short walk from Piazza San Marco' and 'easily accessible by public transportation.'
I see a dozen options about ways to get from airport to Venice, but no specifics.

Does anyone know the if the best way to get there would be a bus or waterbus, where I'll find it, and what 'stop' I would get off at?

Although a reviewer said the boat from airport let him off practically in front of hotel, I'm really unclear about the logistics - and don't want to wait until I land to figure it out.

Any insight would be appreciated.

I have taken the airport bus to Piazza Roma, then the vaporetto #1 to the St Marks stop, San Zaccaria. My hotel was less than a five minute walk. I found it pretty easy

You can also take the alilaguna from the airport

You have a few choices-

Water Taxi- walk out of the airport front doors and follow the signs to the taxi dock (a 10 minute walk). This is the most expensive transport but if there are a few of you to split the cost or you don't mind the expense, it is a great way to arrive in Venice.

Bus/Vaporreto combo- Take land bus line #5 or the ATVO line (the stops are well marked just outside the airport arrival doors) to Piazzale Roma (end of the line) and then the vaporetto to San Zaccaria. The vaporetto dock is easy to find.

Alilaguna boat- follow the signs just outside the airport doors to the dock (a 10 minute walk) and take the Alilaguna boat and get off at San Zaccaria (1 hour and 10 minutes).

The Venice airport is very small, well signed, and it would be almost impossible to be lost or confused.

Here is a link to a vaporetto map you can download as well as some great up to date information on Venice and Instructions for Visitors. Included is everything you need to know about getting around in Venice.

Enjoy your trip!

If you want to transfer you can take the bus to Piazzale Roma - as far as you can go by land and then take the vaporetto to San marco and walk. Print out the hotel directions and be prepared to deal with your luggage on and off the vaporetto and over a couple of bridges.

If you take the alliguna from the airport you avodi the bus transfer - but still have to deal with luggage on and off the boat and over the bridges.

If you take a water taxi (but big $) you may be able to get closer to your hotel (depending on where the closest taxi dock is) but the driver will help you deal with your luggage at lest in and out of the boat.

We always book a hotel with a private dock to avoid all theis hauling luggage around.

Your own hotel's website gives the following information:
From Venice: take the Alilaguna boat and get off at San Zaccaria (1 hour and 10 minutes) or alternatively, take bus line n. 5 or the ATVO line to Piazzale Roma and then the vaporetto to San Zaccaria.

The only misleading thing is that they should have said "From Marco Polo airport."

The alilaguna is 15 euros per person one way.

The #5 bus is 5 euros. 7 euros for vaporetto.

The bus is packed! And if you do take the bus and vaporetto, don't forget to validate your ticket by waving it at the red machine.

We took the alilaguna to our hotel on arrival in Venice, and the bus when we left Venice.

You are staying in a VERY crowded part of Venice. Good luck with the tsunami of tourists.

We took the Alilaguna water bus and it was great! I would ask your hotel for the options to arrive at their hotel. They will give you options and prices.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience.

The hotel directions threw me off, because it said 'From Venice' ? and the different combos of train and/or bus didn't give a clue as to which was best way to go.

Aware the hotel is in the center of Venice - but I'd rather be close to the main square than get lost each time I try I find my way back to hotel. It's a working trip and need to get back to hotel - and it's Internet connection - throughout the day.

Thanks again!

We prefer Alilaguna & always use their boats to & from the airport - most recently 2 days ago. Just be aware of the last boat times, as if your flight is due in at 11pm & it is delayed or you take a while getting through the airport, there's a chance you might miss the last one. It happened to us once with a very delayed flight and we walked the 10 minutes to the dock before finding the last boat had gone - and then had to walk back to take the land bus then a night vaporetto. The current English language timetables are here - http://alilaguna.it/en/lines/summer-line-timetables.

My user name should be 'namby-pamby traveler' because especially when I go to a new city I do NOT like to fool around with public transportation - especially with luggage, especially in Venice. I have come in from Marco Polo every conceivable way and my total favorite is still the water taxi. You're looking at 100 euros, so hopefully your company will pay. As everyone says, it's a ten minute walk from the terminal to the boat launch, but go see the man at the water taxi counter about midway in the main terminal first. He gives me two receipts, one for the taxi, one for my records - and he makes sure that my suitcases meet me at my own RESERVED taxi instead of me wheeling them on those rickety carts. I also have the covenience of being told when the taxi is ready so that I don't have to wait around the boat launch if it's not, and I don't have to 'fight' with other passengers over non-reserved taxis. Tell them your hotel and they will get you close.

I agree with you 100% about staying in the thick of things. Most of the crowds disperse from St. Mark's by 7PM, because the vast majority of visitors have to go back to their cruise ships. Before 10AM and after 7-8PM are practically deserted and it's Magic!

Another vote for the Alilaguna service. Relaxing and picturesque introduction to this lovely city. And as for the crowds, well it's Venice not the Falklands
