Thanks hetismij2 - I had forgotten how good The Guardian is at travel articles! Some good stuff there re night trains etc. Seem bizarre that we are discussing train travel at a time when here in the U.K. there is a nationwide train strike going on,

I use trains to travel from London to Belgium and France. I always use trains inside Italy. It is so convenient - you depart from the city centre and arrive at the city centre. It is fast and safe. My rule in Europe is - whenever I CAN use a train within my journey, I SHOULD.
