training from Salzburg to Monaco
Is it feasible to think that I can train from Salzbug to Monaco and see a few sights along the way in 4 days. There are no direct routes. Any tips on special stops I should make? Point to point vs. urail pass?

It seems like surely point-to-point will be better than any rail pass, but you can check it for sure at www.railsaver.com

The first issue is whether you have ever been to Venice. If not, then I would allow two nights there, unless you absolutely can't afford it. I'd recommend the earliest possible departure from Salzburg to give you as much day time the first day as possible.

Then if you need to economize, you could leave late on the second day and relocate to Verona for the second night. Spend night three there - - this is probably good advice whether you spent two nights in Venice or just one.

From Verona, you could make it all in one day to Monaco with no strain. If you're traveling really light, you could stop in Milan for a few hours to see the Duomo, the Last Supper or both.

Remember that you typically need reservations to see the Last Supper.

Best wishes,

Rex
From Salzburg, the best travel time is a little over 13 hours. The route without making detours is to leave Salzburg at 6:22, change at Kufstein, Austria for Milan, and change in Milan for Monaco.
You pass through Innsbruck, Verona, and San Remo on the way. The train also goes through Bozen/Bolzano on the way to Milan.

If you deviate from this route, you then open up a tangle of possibilities that goes on for ever.

For example, you could go from Salzburg to Zurich. From there to Monaco is a tortuous route, but the scenery opens up dramatically in Switzerland.
But you still end up going through Milan!!
Unless you take really round about route.
The night train from Venice SL (22.43) and Verona (0.30) to Monaco-Monte Carlo (8.42) is a good alternative.
