train vs car in Denmark
 

I'm planning a week-long trip to Denmark with my husband and I'm trying to decide train vs auto travel. I will be in Copenhagen for a few days and then want to travel to Mon, Aero, Odense and some of the Helsingor/Hillerod areas. Any suggestions for choosing between the two modes of travel?

My family spent a few days driving around in Denmark last summer, and the roads are good, easy to drive around the country. We had a great time exploring back roads and little seaside villages that would have been much more difficult if we were depending on trains. My daughter spent much of the summer in Copenhagen in a study program, and she took the train most of the time. Good train connections as well. I would just vote for the car as more convenient for exploring.

All of the places you list are easily accssible by train.

Have you considered going to Roskilde for the Cathedral and the Viking Ship Museum?

thanks to both of you for the quick replies. I like Nikki's ideas for the small seaside villages. Any memorable ones you might suggest? Ira, I'm glad you mentioned the Viking Museum. We were considering it. I have been to Norway's and enjoyed it. I think we saw a train/car option offered by Eurail or Scanrail and that might be the best of both worlds.

We stayed in a lovely B&B in Tisvildeleje, a beach community on the north coast of Zealand. Near there is the fishing village of Gilleleje, where the Danes smuggled Jews out of the country in fishing boats to escape the Nazis.

We also took a drive south of Copenhagen and found some other fishing village but I don't have a map handy so I can't remember the name. When I am home in a few days I will try to find it.

If you go to the Viking museum in Roskilde, see if you can get on one of the boat rides in a traditional craft. Everybody helps row and hoist the sails. The museum tours are very interesting also.
