Train Verona to Prague - connections?

Am I reading the timetables correctly that there is not a direct train between Verona and Prague? when I look, it appears that there are 5 or 6 or even 8 connections? and some of those connections have a 5 minute window? Is that correct? I'm worried that with our luggage we would never make the connections. I thought there was a direct train (or one with one change) am I totally wrong?

Try www.bahn.de.

There is one suggestion there that has only one change in Munich, with about 15 minutes for the change (with a train coming from Italy, I would find 15 minutes a wee bit too tight...).

Have you checked www.whichbudget.com for cheap flights between, say, Venice and Prague or Milan and Prague?

In Munich 15 minutes would be enough time (for me) since both trains in question would almost undoubtedly come into the main platform area as opposed to some of those "outlying" non-covered arrival points that it seems like a trek to reach.

Not looking at the timetable I am not surprised there is no direct service Verona-Prague but suspect the most direct route is Verona-Munich. I love trains but in this case would definitely consider flying.

<<I'm worried that with our luggage we would never make the connections.>>

On 99% of all the trains in Europe, your luggage will "make the connection" if YOU make the connection - - since there is no such thing as checked luggage. You carry it on the train yourself, and you carry it off and on to the next train with which you are connecting.

Best wishes,

Hi Maz,

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
shows a train Verona/Prague with an 18 min change in Munich.

The night train leaves at 01:01 with a change of trains in Munich at 06:30

Have you considered flying?

I really wanted to train ride over the alps from Italy to Prague on our trip in July. But everytime I look at the tables, I get confused. Thanks for your input.

I think I may just have to look into flying. I haven't made any reservations yet so I'm not "locked in" to any one place yet.

well, Whichbudget.com shows only one flight from Italy to Prague and that is through Rome. Are there any other airline sites to check?

Here is an old thread about discount airlines. Unfortunately, discount airlines tend to come and go; volare.web, for example, has gone bankrupt.

http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34493133

Your best bet might be by train via Munich after all.

There is the connection that both Ira and I have mentioned:
dep Verona Porta Nuova 11.01
arr Munchen Hbf 16.26
dep Munchen Hbf 16.44
arr Prague hl.n. 22.45

18 minutes is plenty of time to get from one track to another in the main train station at Munich; the question is whether your train coming from Italy (which probably started from a city far south of Verona) will arrive on time.

To be sure to make your connection, there is a train dep. Verona at 9.01 arr. Munchen Hbf 14.26.

If you decide on the day trains with arrival in Prague at 10:45 p.m., I would suggest that you request your hotel to make arrangements for you for transportation from the station to the hotel.

You might also consider a direct night train - no changes - from Munich to Prague:
dep Munchen Hbf 23.08
arr Prag hl.n. 8.15

Barring a major disaster, you could connect to that with a direct train -- no changes:
dep Verona Porta Nuova 17.01
arr Munchen Hbf 22.26

Or, if you want to be absolutely safe, with an earlier train leaving Verona 15.01 arriving Munich 20.26.

Since you speak of "we" and "our," I assume that there are two of you travelling together. I would then suggest that you reserve a compartment for two on the train from Munich to Prague.

Thanks so much. yes there are two of us going on the trip - a celebration of the end of medical training!!!

After all the information given here, I'm rethinking my trip and seeing if I can rearrange things to be able to fly Rome-Prague instead of the train. It just sounds easier.
