Train Travel with Bayern Ticket

We are planning to base ourselves in Rothenburg, before moving onto Bavaria.

We hope to see Wuzburg, Bamberg and Nuremberg during those days.

Does anyone know is there is a limit on the Bayern Tickets you can purchase through the week. I'm asking because I heard that there are limitations on the Happy Week-end Ticket.
I was told you go only buy a ticket on a Sat or a Sun, not on both days.

Thanks,

Elizabeth

That's some crazy advice you got. You can buy a S-W ticket for every Sat and Sun of the year if you like, and a Bayern ticket for every weekday! Your travel counselor probably meant that one ticket is only good for one day - either Sat or Sun - which is absolutely correct. You can buy these daypasses in advance if you like for specific days.

Thanks Russ,

I was hoping she had that wrong. I couldn't find an e-mail address to contact Bayern directly so I decided to post my concerns on Fodors.

Thanks again.

Elizabeth

Elizabeth -

The Bayern train ticket is good for unlimited travel in Bavaria for up to five people on non-IC or IR trains. The ticket is 21 Euros and is good from 9 am to 3 am the following day.

The Happy Weekend ticket is 28 Euros and is good for unlimited travel within Bavaria on a Saturday or Sunday for up to five adults with a similiar time frame.

Melnq8

Thanks for your response. Could you explain what non-IC or IR trains mean?

For my trip to Wurzburg from Rothenburg I can take a trip that is labelled 'RB'. Have no idea what that means either.

Hope you can clear this up.

Elizabeth

luvtofly: Here's a link to read up on the daypasses in Germany: Read about the Schönes Wochenende ticket, then click on "Länder Tickets" on the right to get to the Bayern Ticket.

http://www.bahn.de/pv/int_guest/offers/pv2_offers_national.shtml

The RE, RB, S, and SE are the trains you can use - They're regional and local trains that are great if you're only traveling a couple of hours each way. Longer trips would require you to change trains frequently to stay on them. The IC, ICE, and EC trains are long-distance babies that really zip along.

Rothenburg, by the way, is already in Bavaria; the Bayern Ticket could be purchased and used there to see the cities you mention. Würzburg would probably be the most logical base from a logistic perspective and would minimize your travel time.

Elizabeth -

High speed trains - (ICE, IC)
Long distance trains (IR)
Regional trains (RB & others)
Urban train (S)

Just check your train schedule before getting on a train - it will indicate the type of train and what changes (if any) will be necessary.

Hi Russ,

Thanks for your explanation about the trains.

On the subject of Wurzburg, most affordable pensions with ensuites, are out in the suburbs, and require a bus trip into the city centre to catch the train.

I've surfed the net and can't find a room, under 80 Euros in Wurzbug.

This is why we have chosen to stay in Rothenburg where the good pensions are at least close to the train station.

Elizabeth

Melnq8,

Thanks for clearing up my confusion. We will certainly check the explanation before we take the trip.

Elizabeth

Hotel Barbarossa (I've stayed here myself - nice breakfast, en suite) in luvtofly:
Wurzburg is centrally located and would all fall in your price range; there are others there too. If you're interested in W'burg, you can search for them in English at:
http://www.wuerzburg.de/tourismus/ho...s=start&sp[was]=e
Hi Russ,

Thanks for your recommendation for an affordable hotel in Wurzburg. Hotel Barbarossa doesn't have a website so I have some questions. How close is it to the train station? Were the rooms very small?

They do have an e-mail address so maybe I will contact them about their prices.

Elizabeth

Location is very good - in the center, maybe 4-5 blocks to the station as I remember. Noisy with the window open. Don't remember the AC situation. My single was smallish but comfortable. Würzburg is a MUCH more city-like place than R'burg and will be a lot less quaint - stay in R'burg if you're looking for "cutesy" and can handle longer daytrips from there, W'burg for convenience of travel. W'burg does have some nice wine bars and a good Biergarten or two near the river make it seem a little less bustling than cities of similar size, and the river area and the bridge across the Main does faintly recall Prague, but it was virtually flattened during the war and is mostly modern.

There is another place in W'burg called the Hotel Regina - right across from the station - that I've had good reports on. It does have a website and is about in the same price range, but I've never been myself.
