train travel through Alps
 

We will be traveling in June to Germany and Austria. We plan to travel by train and/or bus. We will be in Salzburg for a few days, including a day trip to Königssee (Berchtesgaden). Next we want to go to Mittenwald. It looks like we need to take a train from Salzburg through Munich to get to Mittenwald. Is there a better way to get to Munich from Salzburg (or Konigssee) without renting a car? Thanks!

Going via Munich is about an hour longer than taking the really scenic inland route thru Austria, from Salzburg to Innsbruck, down a deep Alpine valley, and then a short train ride to Mittenwald. You do NOT need to go through Munich; you can go from Salzburg through Innsbruck and in some instances change in Innsbruck for a train which goes directly to Mittenwald. You might want to consult the GermanRail site: www.bahn.de and click on the English version.

You can buy the tickets in Salzburg at the train station; you do not need to consult any ticket agencies or other rail ticket re-sellers unless you want to.

Yes but many require a simple change of trains in Seefeld - no problem but a direct train. You always have to change in Innsbruck.

If possible stop n Innsbruck for a while or better the whole day of first journey - neat city.
