Lincoln: One of the Finest British Towns but...
one rarely hears of anyone - foreign tourists anyway - heading to it.
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit there, both to the lower and upper towns - one of the greatest cathedrals in the UK!

We went to Lincoln to visit a friend who was living there at the time. We drove there via Boston from London. It is a great cathedral and some of the small local churches are also interesting. I would recommend it as a stopover for people going North or South on a driving trip. We went to Hadian's Wall after Lincoln.

I visited three four years ago, in November and loved it. I have family in Scunthorpe, and my cousin took us down to Lincoln for the day. The cathedral and the castle were fascinating, and I would have loved to have had much more time exploring the town. it was definitely worth the day. Is there a train directly from London?

No, but so what? It's a painless connection, usually at Newark, and from KX to Lincoln averages about two hours, with an average of ten minutes at Newark and departures a bit more often than hourly. It's a faster and usually less hassle journey than getting to Stratford upon Avon, for example.
The general British consensus is that, once you've seen the cathedral (and, at a pinch, the castle), there's no there there (or rather, there is, and it's the epitome of a modern British Crap Town).
CW is right, though, to point out that, with a car, there are some amazing churches in the nearby small towns. The East Anglian Tudor and Stuart era Taliban were peculiarly inept in trying to destroy the previous five centuries' art in the area, and a remarkable amount sort of survives: badly disfigured by the fanatics, but often in decent enough nick you can get a hint of the glories Protestant extremists succeeded in wiping out almost everywhere else.

When I took the train there from London I had to change in Newark but had to change train stations as well and did a lovely stroll thru Newark, a bustling market town.
Well again to a foreign tourist what we find nice to Brits may be ho-hum but I really loved Lincoln.

At the risk of being pedantic, Lincoln is a city and not a town. Residents of cities can get quite sniffy when their location is called a mere town.
Last time I was there was last year where I saw one of the copies of the Magna Carta on display in the castle. I believe this is now on tour.
Lincoln is also famous for its Imp, the colour Lincoln Green and the wonderful pie shop at the top of the hill leading to the Cathedral!

We had a wonderful if short visit in 2010 in between York and a hotel east of London. The cathedral is lovely and we were able to see the Magna Carta in the castle, a tour of which was also fun. So it was definitely worth spending a half day there.
