Train travel Rome to Venice
 

Does anyone have thoughts about traveling from Rome to Venice by train? Is it a good idea? Is it a long trip? Would an overnight, private compartment be a choice? I'm taking my grand-daughter in April and would like to have some time in both cities.
Thanks for any suggestions.

EuroStar Italia express trains make the trip in 4 1/2 hours. There is frequent service. See the timetables at www.bahn.de or the timetables and fares at www.trenitalia.com.

One more thing. Venice has two train stations, Mestre on the mainland and Santa Lucia in the heart of the city. You want Venezia Santa Lucia.

Since you want to see both Venice and Rome, I suggest that you fly into V and out of R.

Good advice from Ira. I did just that recently: Flew into Venice and out of Rome.

Hi we took the eurostar in May to Venice from Rome. Easy! I booked online before we went about a month or so in advance. I brought along the email confirmation I had printed out. It had our seat no.s on it, the date & time of our train and carriage no. The trip is very comfortable. We had 1st class tickets, but, the 2nd class carriage looked good too. We had a 3 year old with us and she enjoyed the trip. When you arrive at the train terminal you can head to the information booth to the left of the trains and they speak english. They will tell you what line your train will depart from and you can board early. Or they have the boards and even displays that list the train line you need. We stowed our luggage on the overhead racks and behind our seats, and there are luggage racks as you enter. A train officer checked our email confirmation and issued us a ticket for the journey. Very smooth process.We enjoyed seeing the countryside, the train made 4 or 5 stops before arriving at the Santa Lucia train station and you can buy your vaporetto tickets just in front of the Vaporetto stops. The Vaporetto no. 1 is the slowest but it stops all along the grand canal.It beats flying in planes. But if you are strapped for time then flying is a better option.( also had trouble booking online on the trenitalia.it english site. If you have problems, go on the italian site an no problem there. Booked with credit card.You should qualify for a family discount if there is more than 2 of you.
