train travel in italy

hi

my friend and i will be in italy end of sept-early october and we hope to be doing most of the travelling by train. our itenary includes milan - rome - amalfi coast -milan, with side trips in milan and the amalfi coast

i am just wondering if we should buy our tickets in italy or would it be worthwhile to get the trenitalia packages from outside europe (we're malaysians). i checked that it is USD175 for 4 days of rail travel with the package via the internet.

another thing is that we actually arriive and leave europe from zurich. are we able to take a train to milan directly from the zurich airport or do we have to go to another train station? does anybody know how much that ticket is?

thanks. this forum is so informative, am actually picking up tips just reading other posts!

On week days you can fly from Zurich to Naples (Amalfi Coast area) for as little as 59 Euro. Why not fly there first and then train north? The Italian train website is www.trenialia.com

There are several rail sites that compare schedules/prices/passes. Enter your itinerary on www.railsaver.com and click the box "only if it saves me money".

Just be sure you know the luggage weight restrictions for the airline. Some of the budget airlines charge $$$ if your luggage or carry-on is overweight. They can also be very picky about their check-in times and refuse to let you board if you are even a few minutes late.
