Train travel in Germany

I am planning a week long trip for August and I am considering buying a Eurorail pass. I am planning on traveling to Munich, Berlin and then going out of Germany to Prague. Is it better to buy an individual train pass for each trip or should I just go for the Eurorail regional country pass. If it helps I am 26 yrs old and the Eurorail regional pass is $315 USD.

Are you starting your trip in Munich?

I doubt you will save money by buying a rail pass, but you would buy convenience. Which is more important?

If you can commit to travel dates well in advance, point-to-point tickets will be much cheaper than a pass. If you book well in advance (up to 90 days allowed) on the German Rail site, www.bahn.de, you can get discount fares. For example, the standard 2nd class fare for Muenchen-Berlin is €113, but the Dauer-Spezial fare is as low as €29. The standard 2nd class fare for Berlin-Praha is €60.20. The Europa-Spezial Tschechien fare is as low as €19.

Footnote: Those discount fares are for specific dates and times and the tickets are non-refundable.

We really enjoyed the freedom a Flexipass gave us on our trip last month to Germany and Austria.

$316 USD = €232. The total for 2nd class, standard fare point-to-point tickets for Muenchen-Berlin and Berlin-Praha is €163.20, still much cheaper than a pass. And these tickets are completely flexibile. Buy a ticket and get on any train.

Oops! Bad math. Make that total €173.20.

Hi lw,

You can find fares at www.bahn.de.

It is unlikely that you will want a railpass.
