Train travel from Venice to Florence

Suggestions for travel in the morning from Venice to Rome. We will take the train. Does anyone have suggestions for when to buy tickets-here or when we get there? Do we need to reserve early? First class vs second class? What station should you use in Venice? Many questions but hope you can help. I have been on some of the train sites but am still needing help! Thanks...this site has helped so much.

Roma Termini to Venice SL (Santa Lucia)

You probably want Eurostar, the fastest train 4.5 hours. Many find 2nd class more than adequate, some prefer 1st since it's slightly roomier and less crowded.

Many choices along this route so no need to reserve in advance.

Check schedules and prices here:

http://www.trenitalia.it/en/index.html

Schedules only show for 60 days in advance, but you can plug in fake dates as examples. You can attempt to purchase tickets at this site but many/most people find it frustrating and even impossible.

If you're very concerned or will be traveling on a holiday weekend, buy your tickets a few days ahead.

Trip takes about 3hrs - schedules are on www.trenitalia.com

If you are in Venice proper you'll depart from Venice Sta Lucia station.

Unless your girth requires it, 2nd class is perfectly fine on the ES trains that ply that route.

Trains run every 2hrs or so, and don't sell out. There is no need to reserve early.

You can save 20% if you buy a discount fare like the Amica fare.

Some people successfully purchase tickets online from home but many, many report difficulties with credit card transactions on the website. Don't fret.

You can do this in Venice at any travel agency displaying the trenitialia sign. If you're not looking for them you may not see one, but once you start to look you'll see there are quite a few.

That's 3hrs Venice to Florence. Another 90min on to Rome.

Your title mentions Venice to Florence, but your message says Venice to Rome. ?

The main station in Florence is Santa Maria Novella.

I am confused to kjht50, are you going from Venice to Florence or Venice to Rome? The train from Venice to Florence is about 3 hours and the train from Venice to Rome is about 4 1/2 hours.

You no doubt have all the information you now need in any case. Do know, you will want to go to one of the yellow boxes which are by the train tracks to validate your train ticket. You can watch other train travellers do so and it is quite easy to do.

Sorry about the confusion. I have been looking at so many things and didn't reread like I needed to. We will be going from Venice to Florence on a Sunday morning and then will go from Florence to Rome on Tuesday. The train help was great. If anyone else is reading this....do we need to reserve taxi's when arriving in Rome or can you get them at the train station. Thanks again and sorry for the confusion

You can get a taxi at Roma Termini. But go to the official line in front of the station; do not go with any of the touts who want to help you. And make sure the meter is set to Tariffa 1.
