Yes indeedy what you see on trains between gthe maga tourist cities to me is often as nice as what I see in those cities. Pity those who only see crowded airports, tarmacs and mobbed tourist cities.

We are all for the train. It is part of our grand adventure. Our real sightseeing plans were Paris and our tour of Italy. Nice was a throw in. What we see..we see. We can't see everything we realize that.

We are stopping by Nice next March -- flying into Paris-> TGV to Barcelona for Gaudi tour -> Nice -> northern Italy -> flying out of Venice. Barcelona and Nice are the "new" sights on this trip.

PS I usually go to the German site -- bahn.de -- to check schedules -- I don't think you can book out this far though.

You can only book German trains or those involving Germany on www.bahn.de/en but on www.voyages-sncf.com for France and www.trenitalia.com for Italy you can book at least 90 days in advance and maybe longer.

I bought tickets from Nice to Paris for November last night. I used the www.voyages-sncf.com site in French and had no problems.

Jimwoh99 - As a fellow Ontarian I am so sorry you will be in wonderful Nice for one night only. And please don't be cross but it is so easy to fly from Nice. The airport is no more than 4 miles from the town centre. I know I know you don't want to fly. Anyway I hope you have a wonderful trip.

Micheline..I am not from Ontario but I do love Canada. I live in Canton, Ohio but we are driving the 5 hours to Toronto. We save over 700 dollars by flying out of Toronto plus we spend less time in the air with less stops. To us the train is an adventure in itself.

Each to their own. We are not doing the train for speed. If I was in a great hurry I would fly. The train is part of the adventure.

Many folks seem to dread time on trains but I like jim love the travel aspect of traveling as well - you see the lay of the land and not just airports and tarmacs.

PalenQ it's not that we dread time on trains. I love some train travel. It's just that it seems a lot in a short amount of time for a retired couple. They are well informed now and they know what to expect so I'm sure it will they will be fine.

Sorry annw..there is not a direct flight from Nice to Florence.
You are better off traveling by train..Is faster..

Thanks, kis -- I did look into it; most stop in CDG, Munich, or elsewhere -- can do in a few hours but we are back to the train.....

Pisa is the big airport in the Florence region - Florence itself is a minor airport so look to flights to Pisa International Airport!

Now all I have to figure out is when to buy my tickets from Nice to Genoa and Genoa to Rome. I bought my train tickets from Paris to Nice and that was easy and no bank breaking. We paid 79 Euros for 2 on 1st class top deck!!

Ventimiglia to Genoa and Genoa to Rome - may not be able to buy a Nice to Genoa ticket I suspect(not sure)_ but if cannot the commuter train Nice to Ventimiglia costs just a few euros and a flat fare and no seat reservations, etc - so www.trenitalia.com for your tickets if www.voyages-sncf.com can't do Nice to Genoa as I suspect but am not sure. even then check Ventimiglia to Genoa to see if cheaper than Nice to Genoa (factoring out the cheap commuter train Nice to Ventimiglia.
