train travel from munich to zurich

best option?
direct route or via innsbruck?

what is 'best' - fastest or one that takes much longer but which is much more scenic - via Innsbruck gorgeous Alpine route - direct route via Bregenz nice but not as scintillating scenery. Cost more as well perhaps via Austria - www.bahn.de German rail site offers deep discounts on direct route.

check out these great sites for more info on that question and routings - www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com. Is this all of your train travels?

Hi pedelle,

I live just south of München and travel to Switzerland about two times a year.

I really love the route via Innsbruck that goes through the Tyrolian Alps. Strongly suggest you go that route.

Have fun!

Going via Innsbruck does not take that much longer.. adds a bit more than one hour to the direct route which takes 4h 10m.

If you plan to go in winter, keep in mind that the days are shorter when you choose a connection via Innsbruck to enjoy the scenery.

Yes for the extra 90 minutes, including change time in Innsbruck over the direct route I would also strongly recommend the Austrian route, it will probably cost more. Even consider taking a quick look at Innsbruck IMO - train station a short walk from town center with old church, gardens, etc. Put bags in a station locker.
