TRAIN TRAVEL FROM CHIUSI ?
WE WILL HAVE A RENTAL CAR WHILE WE ARE STAYING IN MONTEPULCIANO. WE
HAD PLANS TO DROP IT OFF IN CHIUSI TO BE ON OUR WAY TO AC. WILL WE TAKE THE TRAIN FROM CHIUSI TO ROME AND THEN THE TRAIN TO NAPLES? HOW LONG SHOULD THIS TAKE, I KNOW IT WILL ONLY BE AN ESTIMATE AS DELAYS CAN HAPPEN. IS THIS THE BEST PLAN OF TRAVEL? THANKS BXL |
Please take off your cap lock when posting questions as it is more polite not to use all caps.
You can check the train times on this site: http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml |
You can check here for train schedules, etc-
http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage.html Yes, dropping the car in Chuisi and then catching the train is a good idea unless you want the car on the coast. |
So sorry about the caps lock,I thought it would be easier to read. My mistake and thanks for the tip.BXL

Where are you going on the AC? If Sorrento, I would just drive and drop it there.
|
Bob, We are staying in Amalfi. BXL

I think I would drop the car in either Sorrento or Salerno. If you train to Rome, it will take about 1 1/2 hours. The fastest train to Naples will take about 1 1/2 hours. Then you would change to the local train for Sorrento (about 70-80 minutes). Next you would have to catch a bus to Amalfi (about 1 hour). That's over 5 hours without taking into account that you will have to hang out in stations waiting for connecting trains/buses.

As long as you're driving past Rome, and not into it - keep the car!
|
Thank you for the suggestions. So I guess the driving from Montepulciano won't be to bad
if we avoid major cities? How much time will we save by keeping the car? Thanks again BXL |
You can find driving times on maps.google.com, then compare that to the train itinerary you find on the trenitalia or bahn.de site posted above.
|
It's autostrada most of the way. You can get driving times on either viamichelin.com, mappy.com or autostrade.it.

I just returned from italy and the AC we drove from Rome to Positano and it took us approx 5 hours and we had a car that shimmed over 80K so we kept under that. from Rome to Naples took around 4 hours and it is mostly autostrada. from Tuscany add at least 1 1/2 hours. Romatravel

Or drive the car to Florence, return it and take a direct high-speed train to Naples - 3.5 hrs is the train ride i believe and they leave about every 2 hours.
<So sorry about the caps lock,I thought it would be easier to read. My mistake and thanks for the tip.BXL> Well to me you are right - it is easier to read and i never under why all caps is so impolite. I indeed like it and yes much easier to read in the stack. WELL TO ME YOU ARE RIGHT - IT IS EASIER TO READ and i never understand why all caps is so impolite, but it is to quite a few FodorOligarchs. I indeed like it and yes much easier to read in the stack. |
Thanks for the helpful info. We would like to drive as little as possible,I am an awful back
seat driver.I like the idea of going to Florence and taking the train to Naples. Now my next question, I went on the Trenitalia website and am very confused with the many lists of trains to take. AV,AV Fast,ES,ES Fast! Which one will get us to Naples in about 3.5 hrs? Any idea of the cost for one way? I do appreciate everyones input. BXL |
Trenitalia shows departure and arrival times, and total travel time and ticket cost (non-discount) so I'm not sure where you're confused.
Don't worry about the difference between AV, AV Fast, etc. They are essentially the same rolling stock and travel time for this route. Pick the train that takes ~3hrs 15min and departs/arrives when you want to. Your choices are 6:40am, 7:49, 8:49, 9:49, 10:49, 12:49, 13:33, 14:49, 15:49, etc. The non-discounted price is €63.70 for a 2nd class ticket. 15% Promo fare is €57.00. |
J62, Thanks for the train info. The confusion for me was the difference between AV, AV Fast etc. I didn't know they all take the same amount of time.
Thanks again, BXL |
From Naples i would go onto to Salerno train station then take the bus to amalfi from the station area - negating the hectic change in Naples and taking the dicey CircumVesuviana slow cattle train to Sorrento then changing again to the Amalfi bus
Or you can take a high-speed train from Florence to Rome then change to a train to Salerno note none of the high-speed trains serve Chiusu which is why it's better to go back to Florence - the Florence to Rome and Rome to Naples high-speed trains do not stop anywhere in between. |
>>>FodorOligarchs<<<
Basic internet etiquette. It's not just Fodor's, but all internet sites. All caps is considered yelling and rude in addition to hard to read. |
kybourbon and others.
I am brand new to this forum . I also have to say that until planning for my trip I had not even learned how to email! I know it's hard to believe this day in age. I guess I am learning as I go and certainly appreciate constructive criticism. I have learned a great deal of priceless info. from this forum, things I wouldn't have known without it. I value each and every comment. Thanks BXL |
Kybourbon - OK but i still do not understand why - at least in this innoculous use of caps in a title
