Train Travel...Die Bahn
 

I am shopping for train tickets from Berlin to Prague round trip on Die Bahn. I am confused about the pricing. Is the fare displayed on the page where you enter your seat preferences the total for all segments and travellers?

I can't help you with that specific question, though I have done Berlin to Prague via train a couple of times. Both times I bought the tickets at the station in Berlin.

i just went onto the behn.de site and put in a single journey - got a fare of 55E.

Just follow the links and the fare should come up at the end of the line.

The price that you see is the full price.

At this time there are reserved seats available at 29E pp each way.

I think that there is also a fee of 1.5E pp each way for the CZ part of the ride.

If you buy in advance, you can save money. For example, you can travel round trip between Berlin and Prague for €58. But you must select a specific date and time of departure.

If you wait until the last day to buy your ticket, you cannot get the discounted price. My understanding is that to get the ticket at a reduced price you must buy at least 3 days in advance. Given that the number of discounted tickets is limited, I would not wait until 3 days beforehand.

You will find that setting up an account with Deutsche Bahn is quite easy. They key is to register your credit card number and have that same card with you on the train.

Last year when I traveled from Munich to Switzerland, I bought my ticket in advance via Internet. DB sent me a PDF file with my ticket which I was able to print on an ink jet printer. The ticket had a coded field on it which the conductor on the train read with a hand-held reader. He checked my credit card against the number on the ticket and then punched my self-printed ticket like it was any other ticket.

The downside to this type of ticket is that you get no refund if you cannot use it. Given that €116 is the normal price, I would be willing to take the risk.
