Train Travel Basel to Munich
 

On Sept.29,2013 Traveling from Basel to Munich with a transfer at Mannheim Hbf. Leaving Basel Bad BF at 13:23 track 4 and arriving Mannheim Hbf at 15:23. The train from Mannheim Hbf to Munich leaves from track 9 at 15:31. Is an 8 minute transfer time sufficient?

Having never been in this station, I cannot say for certain. Having been in many others, this should be sufficient.

Yes if your train is on time but it is not unusual for me after riding zillions of German trains for trains to run late - more than a few minutes - but there are so so many trains even then you will not wait too long. Now if you have a discounted train-specific ticket for both legs then I would build more time into the change - even an hour - have lunch at a station bistro or one outside it - but I think even with train-specific discounted tickets if one train is late you can use that ticket on the next train but be sure about that before setting plans in concrete as they are also non-refundable - for lots of great stuff on German trains I always spotlight these IMO fantastic sites - www.seat61.com - good info on discounted tickets; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com. If taking a handful of longish trips and more you may find the German Railpass even cheaper per day than a string of discounted tickets and you are allowed to just show up and hop virtually any train anytime - full flexibility - full fare tickets can cost a ton.

Even if you took the earlier timing through Karlsruhe you'd only have a few minutes to change but it might be slightly easier.

I would say if the train is on time you will have enough time but I would be at the DOOR of the carriage and ready to get off immediately when the train comes to a stop and on the way to the other platform.

Dukey makes a salient point - it can take ages to get off a train that everyone else is trying to get off - position yourself by the door, luggage in hand to bolt off that train!

I suppose you will travel before October 6th . Otherwise a cannot see why you should make this detour.

The transfer can be made as long as you don;t lollygag.

Be at the train door with luggage in hand before the train pulls into the station

Be sure you don;t have too much luggage to handle easily by yourself (can pick up and walk briskly if necessary) - possibly up and down a couple of steps

If you cannot walk briskly with your luggage or easily negotiate stairs you might want to arrange for a longer stop over - or consider taking less luggage

If you haven't yet bought tickets and I suspect you have not then would you consider traveling through Zurich? You'd have a bit more time to change trains there.
