Train to Tuscany

We will be travelling from Bellagio to Tuscany in Sept. What is the best and fastest way to get to Tuscany - train? We are thinking of taking the train to Florence and picking up a rental car there. Thank you.

Is Florence your destination in Tuscany? If so, yes, train from (probably Varenna, to a switch in Milan)Lake Come to Florence is a fast enough way to get into Tuscany. Are you staying in Florence? If so, the car will be an incumbrance. If you are just picking it up driving further into Tuscany, maybe you want to rent the car earlier.

You can rent earlier and drive to Bellagio, then drive to Tuscany. It isn't that bad a drive, depending on where you are headed in Tuscany.

Thank you for your response. We are actually staying in Greve. I figured it was easier (and faster?)to take the train to Florence from Bellagio.

Hi Yogi - You can find train timetables from Varenna to Florence on:

http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

Journey time is approx 4-4.5 hrs. with a change of train at Milano Centrale.

Hope this helps ...

You m ight consider picking up a car in Como and driving to Greve.

It's a long boring drive from Como to Greve.
However, you'll lose some time driving out of Florence (depending on the time of day).

Possibility: Get off the train if possible at Firenze Rifredi station, a few miles north of town and rent car there and won't have to suffer getting out of Florence.
