Train to Lake District?

Is there a direct train to somewhere in the Lake District from either Heathrow or Manchester Airport? My brother-in-law may need to change his dates as to when he joins us, so we're looking for some options for him.

There's no direct train from MIA, you'll have to change at either Wigan or Oxenholme. Having said that the whole journey is less than two hours.

Rubicund:

MIA is the TLA (three-letter-acronym) for Miami International Airport - and there are a few technical obstacles at present in running direct trains to Oxenholme from there when the tide's in.

It's worth pointing out that getting to the lakes from Heathrow is a pain, involving either a flight to MAN (not the Isle of Man airport, which is IOM) then the trains, or a coach to Birmingham or the tube to Euston - then a direct train.

Flying to Manchester from a foreign airport is definitely preferable.

Why it's less than three hours by train from Euston station in London - changing just once at Preston - there are direct trains from Euston that take 3.4 hr longer. So take the Tube to Euston if you want a nice train. Train fares can be all over the place - full fare tickets can be used on any train - discounted tickets usually have restrictions and may be train-specific - hard to book when landing from North American - you never know when you will get to Euston - and taking the Tube with luggage can be no fun either; the coach to Birmingham then train via Preston flanner talks about may be the best bet.

Check www.nationalrail.co.uk for schedules and fares - full fare can be really high - buses I think have a fairly flat fare structure - cheap. check www.seat61.com for good info on discounted tickets. When coming back they will know exactly when they can leave. And if taking the train around England more than a couple of longer rides check the BritRail England Pass that allows you to jump on any ole train anytime - just show up at the station.

This is very simple and I don't understand the talk of coaches when the links exist for a very easy journey.

The main question is what is your airport of departure?

There are a number of direct flights into MAN.

After that ...the train station is a short covered walkway from terminal 1 , the other two terminals are a slightly longer walk.

After that there is a direct train service to Glasgow. Get this service change at Oxenholme then on to Windermere which is the only train route into The Lakes after the line from Penrith to Keswick was insanely ripped up 40 years ago.

The journey from MAN to Windermere with the change takes around 2 hours.

Only Silvio Burlusconi would dream of train journeys between MIA and Windermere.

You can get a direct train from London Euston to Oxenholme where you have to change to get a train to Windermere.

It is a lot quicker to fly into Manccester as there is a direct train to Oxenholme from the airport - have a look here:

Where are you wanting to be in the Lake District? There is also a rail line which runs round the western coast from Carnforth to Carlisle.

If you are wanting the North Lakes you may do better to get a train to Penrith and then bus to Keswick say...

Made my day, that image of Sarko and Merkel smirking over the old lizard stays with me always. :-)

MIA is the acronym used by the rail companies for Manchester international Airport. It shows as such on the timetables.
