http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?protocol=http:&ld=23&

There's a night train that takes 12 hours. The most direct (and probably most expensive routes) take about 11-13 hours. If you travel more on the regional trains, it will take longer (up to 18 hours). Take the night train, or the direct train during the day and enjoy the journey.

10.5 hours by direct train, the Eurocity "Michelangelo", which leaves Munich at 9:30 a.m. and arrives at Rome Termini at 20:02.

The reference library of a city near you may have the Thomas Cook European Timetable. Table 70 says that trains leave Munich at 0930 and 2030 and reach Rome at 2002 and 0817. The day train has a restaurant car and fine views of the Bavarian meadows, the Alps, and the Apennines. The night train has 1, 2 and 3 berth sleepers, a crowded 6 berth couchette car, seats, and a buffet car.

Ben Haines, London

I would fly to London for $20 on Ryan airs and then Fly to Rome for $45 on Go airlines. Those night trains suck and cost more than flying.
